Upcoming Deadlines


As a past member of MESA, we invite you to renew your MESA membership for 2022. In addition to all of our usual activities at the Annual Meeting, MESA sponsors a number of awards honoring excellence in the field. We hope you will remain a part of this vibrant association. In the meantime, we wanted to share with you some approaching application and submission deadlines.

2022 MESA Awards


MESA welcomes and invites nominations and submissions to MESA's 2022 awards competitions.

MESA Book Awards
Deadline: April 15

Nominations are welcome for the Albert Hourani Book AwardNikki Keddie Book Award, and Fatema Mernissi Book Award. Books must be non-fiction scholarly monographs based on original research published in English between April 1, 2021 and March 31, 2022. Winners for each of the awards receive $1,000 and a certificate of recognition. For more information about nominating a book to the above competitions, see MESA Book Award Guidelines here.
Deadline: June 1

The award recognizes exceptional contributions retired faculty have made to the education and training of others. MESA Mentoring Award Nomination Guidelines.
Deadline: June 1

The award recognizes an individual’s outstanding service to MESA or the profession. Service is defined broadly to include work in diverse areas, including but not limited to outreach, librarianship, and film. Winner is awarded $1,000. Bacharach Service Award Nomination Guidelines.
Deadline: July 1

Students completing their dissertations between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022 may submit entries for the Malcolm H. Kerr Dissertation Awards. The competition is meant to recognize exceptional achievement in research and writing for/of dissertations in Middle East studies. Winner in each category (social sciences and humanities) is awarded $1,000. Kerr Dissertation Awards Nominations Guidelines.
Deadline: August 15

Graduate student research papers on any aspect of Middle East, which have not been previously submitted for publication, are sought for this blind review. Winner is awarded $250. Full guidelines may be found here.

Scholarship Applications due May 1, 2022


The MESA Global Academy offers competitive fellowships to Middle East Studies scholars from the MENA region who are currently displaced in North America. Eligibility criteria for the fellowships include: 1) holding a PhD or equivalent in a field in the social sciences or humanities (graduate students will not be considered); 2) the primary institutional affiliation was in the MENA region prior to displacement; and 3) a publication record indicating scholarly productivity (in English, French, a native MENA language, or principal research language of the field).

Middle East Studies Association
Undergraduate Research Poster Session

Sponsored by the Committee on Undergraduate Middle East Studies (CUMES)

Deadline: June 1, 2022. 

The Committee on Undergraduate Middle East Studies (CUMES) is sponsoring an undergraduate research workshop to be held in conjunction with the MESA annual meeting on Thursday December 1, 2022 from 1:00-5:00pm. The workshop will be led by a diverse group of Middle East studies scholars, drawn from CUMES, MESA award winners, and other leading academics and welcomes student applicants from all disciplines. The workshop includes a formal paper presentation of 15-20 minutes and concludes with a poster session open to all conference attendees.

Students participating in the workshop are invited to attend the full MESA conference, gaining an exposure to the most recent research and experiencing the intellectual vibrancy of a professional academic gathering. This workshop will be valuable for students planning graduate work in Middle East Studies.
