FOR WORKPLACE CHAPLAINS:

What are we about?

By Rev Paul Hills, Vice Chair (Peterborough) CWC

What are we about?  As, hopefully, chaplaincy at work gets going again it’s worth asking that question. There will be lots of answers about care, support, communication etc. and all will be correct. Yet chaplaincy is surely a bit more.

I came across this poem by R.S.Thomas recently and I wonder if it speaks to chaplaincy.  It’s called “The Bright Field”

I have seen the sun break through
to illuminate a small field
for a while, and gone my way
and forgotten it.  But that was the pearl
of great price, the one field that had
the treasure in it.  I realise now
that I must give all that I have
to possess it.  Life is not hurrying

on to a receding future, nor hankering after
an imagined past.  It is the turning
aside like Moses to the miracle
of the lit bush, to a brightness
that seemed as transitory as your youth
once, but is the eternity that awaits you.

Perhaps part of a chaplain’s work is to be the one who doesn’t hurry, who has time to be a listening ear, to “loiter with intent”. In that way a “brightness” might be noted, an opportunity to live more fully might be illuminated and taken. It might be difficult to put that on a corporate spreadsheet, but it could be life changing for one person at least.

TRUSTEE VACANCY - CAMBRIDGESHIRE WORKPLACE CHAPLAINCY

Meeting the pastoral and spiritual needs of the workplace across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough”

Cambridgeshire Workplace Chaplaincy (Charity Reg’n No. 1175654) aims to support chaplains in places of employment throughout Cambridgeshire and Peterborough and has been operating successfully for the last 5 years reaching out and helping chaplains and others in both public and private sectors.

We now have vacancies for two Trustees to help us shape future strategy and policies; and applications are sought from experienced and enthusiastic individuals who would be committed to the aims of CWC.

There are no specified formal qualifications for these posts, and although having chaplaincy experience would clearly help, other applicants could well have knowledge of and sympathy with chaplaincy work through their own experience and commitment.

These posts are voluntary and unpaid, in accordance with Charity Commission rules, but the time commitment is not onerous as we have 4 or 5 hour long meetings per year, and for the last two years during the pandemic, meetings have been held via Zoom. At the moment there no plans to meet in person as the Zoom meetings have been surprisingly successful.

If you are curious to know more, please look up our website:
www.cambsworkplacechaplaincy.org.uk  where you can access a range of leader articles relevant to the role of chaplaincy today. To express an interest or to explore further please contact: info@cambsworkplacechaplaincy.org.uk and Jane Thompson will be able to send further material on what we currently do to try to meet the pastoral and spiritual needs of the workplace, and also to facilitate any applications for the posts of Trustee.

We've added some articles recently to the Workplace Wellbeing Hub including:

👉 Many workers worried that revealing mental health concerns
could result in job loss

A new study claims that there are increasing issues around reporting employee wellbeing whilst hybrid working, as 95 percent of UK employees feel that their company doesn’t do enough to identify and support those with mental health concerns.

Employees Are Sick of Being Asked to Make Moral Compromises
Moral injury, also known as the wounding of the soul, was first studied in veterans who’d witnessed atrocities of war but this has changed in recent times. The past two years have made it increasingly clear that moral injury can occur in many contexts and populations, including the workplace.

Thursday 19th May 2022 10am-1pm

Cambridgeshire Workplace Chaplaincy and the Cambridge Theological Federation have joined together to offer an online symposium for chaplains in the Eastern Region, to address two important questions for chaplaincy:

This is an opportunity for all those involved in chaplaincy in the region to meet together, to share insights arising from the last two years and to learn how these might shape the future development of chaplaincy

This event is for chaplains in all settings and from all faiths and beliefs.
