Neighbourhood Watch in
Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby

eNewsletter #547 - 05 April 2022

This weekly eNewsletter is compiled by Neighbourhood Watch volunteers as a service for residents in Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby council areas. The eNewsletter is a new type of Neighbourhood Watch; utilising the available technology to keep people more connected and up-to-date with local crime and safety issues.

The eNewsletter includes a selection of posts from our local police at the Ku-ring-gai PAC Facebook page (also known as 'eyewatch'), primarily for those not familiar with Facebook. We add anything interesting from a Neighbourhood Watch point-of-view - this could be a local newspaper article, a roadwork warning, crime prevention tip(s), an upcoming Neighbourhood Watch meeting, Q&As from residents, or an item from another Police command ("Crooks know no boundaries!").

🚓 Have you seen anything we should share with the community?
Please email our NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby volunteers. We do value your contributions and thank you for your support.

⚠️ Galston Road through Galston Gorge will be closed for at least 4 weeks due to the risk of further landslides and could stay shut for up to 12 weeks depending on the extent of the damage.
🔎 👷 Investigations by engineers found that a large portion of slope, 70 metres by 40 metres, is unstable and needs to be monitored closely.
We know this will be an inconvenience for the local community, but safety is NSW Roads priority. Thanks for your patience. Continue to check www.livetraffic.com for the latest.

The National Security Hotline (NSC) has recorded its 400,000th contact, a major milestone for one of the critical tools keeping Australians safe from terrorism, foreign interference and other serious threats.
Every day our hotline operators receive information which can then be shared with intelligence and law enforcement agencies for further investigation.
Since it was established in 2002, a simple call, email, or text to the NSC has often been enough to trigger further action and make a difference.
If it doesn’t add up, speak up – Call 1800 123 400. For more information about what you can do to keep Australia safe visit site here.

You ‘herd’ it correctly! The NSW RFS has recruited a team of goats 🐐 to perform several hazard reductions across the state.
The honorary four-legged firefighters have been sourced from local farmers and in a controlled environment are grazing on grass to reduce the fuel loads in fire-prone areas.
No kidding – these goats provide an alternative to burning, which is heavily reliant on favourable weather. Rain hail or shine, these goats are here to help!

UPDATE: The AFP has been advised this matter has been re-scheduled, and the 61-year-old man is expected to appear in Port Macquarie Local Court on Wednesday, 6 April 2022.
A 61-year-old Port Macquarie man who allegedly purchased online items to make 3D printed firearm parts will face court today following a multi-agency investigation.
The investigation began following the establishment of Project Adestria, a joint venture between the Australian Federal Police, Australian Border Force (ABF) and Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre to identify and disrupt illicit firearm activities.
The project allegedly identified the man through online purchases and a parcel which was examined by the ABF.
AFP officers, with assistance from ABF, executed a search warrant at the man’s home earlier this month and seized a 3D printer, two spools of 3D filament and multiple electronic devices, including mobile phones, USBs, SD cards and laptops.
Further examination of these devices by AFP Digital Forensics allegedly found information about using a 3D printer to print firearms including a semi-automatic firearm and an assault rifle.
The man was charged with one count of possessing digital blueprints for the manufacture of a firearm.

From NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby: 'Our 20 Favourite Crime Prevention Tips  for Festive Season '

Tip #10.  If you have a party, lock the front door. Consider allocating someone to monitor guests coming in/out. Thieves aren’t deterred by a house full of
people!

Tip #11. Hide any spare house keys very carefully. Thieves know the typical places:  under door mats, plant pots, fake rocks, or just inside the garage door.

Tip #15. Beware allowing parcels to be delivered to your empty house doorstep. Thieves follow delivery vans. Consider requesting a FREE 24/7 parcel locker, or have mail held at the local post office. Maybe ask family or neighbours to help out?

Tip #16. Consider the deterrent of a dog. Put a dog bowl, warning sign, lead, tennis ball etc. at the front of your property. Consider a plug-in that attaches to sensor lighting and emulates a dog barking. See other 20 Tips for your home on our nhwkuringgaihornsby.org.au/tips/ website.

2 April, From NZ Police
Did you see some good April Fools yesterday? Here's one of our favourites. We like the AFP comment, "How much? Asking for a friend."

Police have today issued new footwear to all staff. These shoes will not be appropriate for any aspects of frontline policing but 🤷
