MEDIA ALERT: We encourage the media to report on the IEC Commissioner interviews taking place this week 

My Vote Counts (MVC) has been closely following the process, headed by the Office of the Chief Justice (OCJ), to fill the vacancy of Commissioner at the Electoral Commission (IEC).  The IEC is one of the most important institutions of our democracy and it is crucial that any process associated with the appointment of its commissioners is open and transparent.  

The interview panel has shortlisted 12 candidates that will be interviewed on 1 April 2022 in Johannesburg. The panel consists of the Acting Chief Justice, Public Protector, Chairperson of the Commission for Gender Equality, and the Chairperson of the South African Human Rights Commission. 

The interviews are one of the most important steps in the appointment process, as they will give the panel a deeper understanding of the potential candidates. Following the interviews, the panel will recommend its preferred candidates to the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs for consideration. It is also important for the interviews to be made accessible for the public to monitor and engage with the process. In order to help ensure this, the OCJ has committed to streaming the interviews on its YouTube page and members of the media can be present at the interviews by emailing the OCJ.  MVC will also be present at the interviews. 

The interviews will take place on 1 April in Midrand, Johannesburg, with each interview being allocated only 30 minutes. You can view the agenda for the day here.  

We encourage members of the media to be present and report on the interviews so that the process is open and transparent and that the appointed candidate is competent and impartial.
