As the Vernal Equinox approached this year, white wildflowers popped to cover the meadow while craggy bare oak branches carved silhouettes against the brilliant blue sky.
It’s the change of the seasons - from frosty mornings and cozy days by the fire, to warm sun on our backs as we once again begin to tend to the plants surrounding us. The days are longer, the turkeys are doing their mating dances, tiny sprouts are peeking through the soil, and everything sings of SPRING!
By early March we’d chosen the cultivars we’ll plant this coming season and placed them on the lap of Ganja Ma for Her blessings. Curating our selection every year is such a challenge. So much needs to be considered: the length of flowering time, the effects and terpenes of the flowers, the vibe of the breeder, and more.
Next week, on April 4th, when the moon is in the earth sign of Taurus, the tiny seeds will be placed into small jars of water under a dark cloth, until they “crack.” Their adventure has begun!
We ventured south from the ranch in early March to the Bay Area, where the cherry blossoms and daffodils were already in full bloom. Our first stop was at the ever-welcoming 7 Stars dispensary in the East Bay city of Richmond, where we always have fun!
The next day we went into San Francisco, our old hometown, to Flore, a wonderful new store in the Castro district run by San Francisco legend Terrance Allen. Being in The City, celebrating cannabis, has been a passion of ours since the late sixties.
Speaking of which, the big day is approaching - 4/20. Along with other Mendocino Sungrown Craft Farmers, we plan to be at Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. It’s mind-blowing to see thousands of stoners in the park, over 50 years later ... As Jerry Garcia said, “What a long strange trip it’s been.”
Rounding out the month, we’ve been behind a curtain of smoke, as we sample and Judge over 280 Flower entries in this year’s Emerald Cup.

Enjoy this footage from the first Emerald Cup Flower Judges' meeting in Mid March. This weekend, we are all reconvening in Ukiah for the final judges' meeting and party! The winning entries will be determined by Sunday, but none of us will know who grew them until the big Emerald Cup Awards show in May!

We’ll have had 10 days to test it all when we gather this coming weekend with all the Judges to make the final decisions. After 18 years of Judging, it remains a labor of love and devotion.
We literally spend hours every day, on the couch, same set and setting, closely inspecting samples. It is an honor and we take it very seriously.
Who would have guessed, back in 1967, that we would be “seriously” smoking weed!

The entries are in and the 18th annual Emerald Cup competition is now underway!
Nikki & Swami will be presenting the "Best Flower" awards at the 2022 Emerald Cup in Downtown Los Angeles LIVE on stage at the Green Street Festival on May 14th, 2022.
This is an amazing opportunity for the Emerald Cup Award winners to showcase that victory and their stellar cannabis creations in the heart of the largest cannabis market in California. This year there are 50 different categories to compete in and over 90 expert judges to determine who has the best of the best!
