The Future of Agriculture: A Conversation Revisited

UBC LFS Dean Rickey Yada will be hosting a panel discussion on April 2 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the future of agriculture at the upcoming Pacific Agriculture Show at Tradex: The Fraser Valley Trade and Exhibition Centre.

UBC President Santa Ono will be the moderator for this conversation on resuming business in a post-COVID era and the impact of climate change on the industry.

Catch the last interactive session with Ellen Polishuk: "Biological Flower Farmers Get Nerdy About Soils" from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on April 6. 

This session is designed primarily for farmers currently growing flowers, but all are welcome!

UBC Farm Hosts Outstanding in the Field

On Sunday, July 17, Outstanding in the Field will be setting their long table here at the UBC Farm for a feast prepared by Guest Chef Phil Scarfone of Savio Volpe.

The UBC Farm was the first Canadian host of OITF in 2005.

On April 21 at 7:00 p.m. join the Vancouver Food Policy Council and Mt. Pleasant Food Network for this in-person event at Mt. Pleasant Neighbourhood House.

Guest speaker, Seth Klein will discuss his book and share how to address the climate crisis with a “wartime approach” and ways government policies could galvanize our communities to work together. 

Followed by a panel of climate and food experts invited to develop solutions together and speak to the climate effects on our food system in the Lower Mainland.

New Musqueam Student Stipend
 
Calling all UBC Musqueam students! Current UBC students from the Musqueam Indian Band are invited to apply for the Musqueam Student Stipend. This $5,000 stipend is for a Musqueam student in any UBC undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, or graduate program who is or plans to be engaging with us at the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm.

Workshop: Spring Foraging - Shoots, Leaves, and Edible Trees
 
Learn how to identify wild foods in spring; flowers, mushrooms, edible trees, shoots, and leaves. Chef & foraging expert Robin Kort will teach you how to find her favourite spring treats and how to cook or preserve them to get the most out of your harvest. We will cover safety and sustainable harvest practices. Great for food nerds and hikers. Note: this workshop consists of 1 hr of Robin’s original video content and a 1 hr live Zoom session.

We strongly suggest registering early as our workshops have limited seats.

CANOVI Carrot Breeding Webinar
 
CSFS Associate and CANOVI Project Lead, Solveig Hanson, recently visited Washington State to cohost a carrot breeding webinar with our collaborators at Organic Seed Alliance. The webinar titled "Breeding Carrots for Production, Resilience, Flavor and Fun in Organic Systems" covered basic genetics, colour expression, trait expression and selection, and demonstrate how to cut, evaluate, and select roots from a diverse array of orange and rainbow-coloured roots.

The 2022 UBC Farm Saturday Farmers' Market is currently open for vendor applications! Our 2022 season will run from June 4 – November 26 at UBC Farm, 3461 Ross Drive, every Saturday from 10:00AM – 2:00PM.

How to apply:
  1. Ensure that you make, bake, grow, or provide the service yourself
    • As a member of the British Columbia Association of Farmers’ Markets (BCAFM), our market adheres principle that all products sold at the market must be made, baked, grown, or raised by the vendor themselves; we also commit to vendors whose products are made, baked, grown or raised in BC
  2. Review our Saturday Market Vendor Guidelines
    • This website contains details about our market fees, logistics, guidelines, policies, health and safety, and how to apply; please familiarize yourself with these guidelines before applying
  3. Apply online and pay your application fee
 
We are currently seeking meat, dairy, and fruit vendors in particular but please feel free to share this widely within your networks for anyone you'd like to see at our market this year!
