A Letter from Laura Weeldreyer, NCTR Board Chair, Welcoming Dr. Kathlene Holmes Campbell to NCTR as the Organization's New CEO
NCTR is excited to announce today that Dr. Kathlene Holmes Campbell will take the reins of NCTR, effective June 1, 2022. Kathlene comes to NCTR from the School of Education at the University of St. Thomas, where she has served as the Dean for the last four years. Her impact there is profound and her passion for the teachers and students will now stretch to reach across the nation and dozens of NCTR partner residency programs.

U.S. Secretary of Education Announces Call to Action to Address Teacher Shortage and Aid Student Recovery
On March 28, 2022, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona issued a nationwide call to action for states, higher education leaders and schools to tap federal resources and work together to address the nationwide teacher shortage and aid student recovering. The announcement builds on President Biden's call in the State of the Union encouraging leaders to use American Rescue Plan funds to address this critical challenge schools and districts across the country are facing.

New Report: Recruiting and Retaining Black Male Educators
|
|
|
In May 2021, NCTR facilitated a convening of Mississippi Teacher Residency stakeholders with Community Conversation: Recruiting and Retaining Black Male Educators in Mississippi & Beyond, which was held over two days to share their work and lessons learned. This report synthesizes those conversations and provides recommendations to state, district, and local policymakers to enhance the recruitment, preparation, and retention of Black male educators.

Registered Apprenticeship Opportunity Can Support Teacher Residency Programs
The United States Department of Labor (DOL) codified K-12 teaching as an “apprenticeable” occupation in November 2021. As a result, programs that train and provide workforce development for K-12 teachers are now eligible to apply and become “registered apprenticeships,” which in turn provides access to recurring workforce development and other dollars that can support sustainability. One of NCTR’s partners, Dallas College, is the first registered teacher residency apprenticeship program in Texas!
Network partners are invited to learn how this news can impact their work during an optional Policy Office Hours session with NCTR Director of State and Federal Policy Cortney Rowland scheduled for 3-4 p.m. CST on Wednesday, April 20 via Zoom. NCTR Board Member Dr. Travis Bristol Contributes to Report on the Impact Same-Race Teachers have on the Academic Success for Students of Color
The National Center for Teacher Residencies (NCTR) Board Member Dr. Travis J. Bristol, associate professor at the University of California, Berkeley’s Graduate School of Education, partnered with Matthew Shirrell of George Washington University and Tolani A. Britton of the University of California, Berkeley, to develop and share a research report titled, "The Effects of Student-Teacher Ethnoracial Matching on Exclusionary Discipline for Asian American, Black, and Latinx Students: Evidence From New York City."
