Great News!!
We are pleased to announce that Mercury Bay Area School is accepting applications from international students from January 2023! The New Zealand border reopens in October 2022 and normal visa processing resumes. We are very much looking forward to welcoming our lovely international students once more!
Message from John Wright, Principal
Greetings to you all - Nga mihi nui tatou
Welcome to our first newsletter - for quite some time. However you will be aware now that we are "all go" for 2023/ 2024 enrolments. Please contact us directly with any inquiries or questions you may have.

It is also entirely appropriate in this newsletter that we acknowledge the incredible role that Lorraine Bristow (International Student Director of our school) has undertaken for many years. Lorraine has been superb and has always made a special point of connecting with all of our International Students, their whānau (family), agents and our homestays to ensure the young people have the very best experience with us. Lorraine has now retired from this role, although she is with us in our Administration team for 2 days a week. We deeply appreciate Lorraine's professionalism, loyalty, dedication, precision and thoroughness in all she has done for us, and wish her all the best.

In closing - it is great to feel like we are back in connection again, and we know the global impact of Covid-19 has been significant. We will all need to be responsive into the future, but for us, we are focused on 'being back in the game' in 2023/2024. Please do not hesitate to contact us at any time.
Lorraine Bristow
Sport at Mercury Bay Area School
It has been a fabulous summer in Whitianga on the Coromandel Peninsula, and our students at Mercury Bay Area School have been able to enjoy a variety of sporting opportunities. We have created a new Sport website which highlights a variety of what is on offer at school and in the community.  You can have a look at the website here: https://sites.google.com/mbas.ac.nz/sport/home
Surfing with Outdoor Education
Our Outdoor Education students were lucky enough to be able to learn to surf this term. Hopefully they will be experts soon! In Term 1, the sea is nice and warm, which makes it a great time to learn to surf!
Plane Build - Learn to Fly!
Earlier in Term 1, two of our students from the school aeroplane build project arrived at the airfield to have their first flying lesson. They met with their instructor Alan and quickly got into how to conduct a preflight check on the aircraft, then into the classroom to learn how an aeroplane actually flies. Moments after take off Alan gave them the controls as they headed off towards Opito Bay. On their return it was smiles all around and a huge sense of achievement that they flew a plane!
Sailing in Mercury Bay
Mercury Bay is a fabulous place to go sailing! Some of our juniors have enjoyed learning to sail through the Mercury Bay Youth Sailing program.  Pictured below are two of our girls who placed 4th in the Hobie Regatta held in Whitianga during Term 1. Well done girls!
