SEARCA Senior Fellow presents Carbon Wise Rice, highlights major structural changes in Southeast Asian agriculture

Dr. Eero Nissila, Senior Fellow of the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) and Managing Director and Chair of the Finland-based Newfields Consulting Ltd., presented the concept of Carbon Wise Rice in a meeting with the management held on 15 March 2022 at the SEARCA Headquarters.

Dr. Nissila is an expert on business strategies, business models and product portfolio development in seed and breeding industry, and on directing research and development (R&D) and product production schemes for meeting the market needs. He earned his Doctor of Agriculture and Forestry (Plant Breeding) from the University of Helsinki, Finland.

 
Vietnam works to preserve vulnerable wildlife amid climate change

Scientists have studied, evaluated and predicted the impact of climate change on wildlife species in Vietnam. Given the limited resources for preservation, it is necessary to identify priority conservation areas to focus on technical, financial and technological resources to achieve high efficiency. Twenty-six out of 105 protected areas including the nature reserve and habitat conservation areas are high priority. Read more…

Malaysia to develop flood disaster risk assessment based on climate change forecasts: Environment minister

Malaysia is currently implementing a flood disaster risk assessment based on climate change forecasts, which is expected to be ready by 2024, said Environment and Water Minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man. The risk assessment will be carried out through flood hazard and flood risks maps under the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), covering 36 major river basins, which are ready to be developed, he said. Read more…

Environmental issues need women participation: DOST
 
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is hoping more women would take part in all levels of climate change development planning, as well as in disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM). Secretary Fortunato de la Peña cited a recent survey on 130 countries that showed that with higher female government representation, there are more international environmental treaties likely to be implemented.
