Working & Caring
April 2022

Welcome to the April edition of Working & Caring!

Signpost have just produced the latest edition of Activity Link - our brochure of activities covering everything we (currently) have planned between April - September 2022. As well as the regular working carers activities (highlighted in the newsletter below), there are also some one-offs: an evening's boat trip, a gin distillery tour (and tasting!) and a cheese and wine evening at the Heatons Centre. Working carers are of course welcome to attend other activities too, but these have been planned over evenings and weekends in the hope that more working carers can attend. There are lots of activities during the week which part-time workers may be able to attend, such as the Walk to Fitness group which meets on the 2nd Monday of the month. You can download Activity Link on our website here.

April is Stress Awareness Month, as well as Carers Active April, and I have included some information about both below. As always, there is also some information for carers thinking about the future - including the brilliant carers scholarship at the Open University, upcoming webinars and small business start up support.

I hope you have a lovely Easter once it arrives, hopefully with some rest time included.

Best wishes,

Rebecca

Stress Awareness Month

April is Stress Awareness Month and we know that stress is something many (if not most) of our carers deal with. We have been running Stress and Anxiety workshops at Signpost; if this is something you would be interested in attending in the future then please let me know and we will keep you updated about future sessions.

The British Red Cross have produced a video (below) and some useful information about understanding and dealing with stress including:
Alongside insurer Aviva, they have also developed a wellbeing toolkit which helps you explore more information and go through activities to help you manage stress, cope with change and boost your wellbeing. It’s full of helpful tips and skills to build your resilience. You can download the toolkit here.

Carers Active April

This month is also Carers Active April - the first of its kind, organised by Carers UK

We all understand the benefits of physical activity, but it can be challenging for unpaid carers to find the time and space to get active, especially for those working carers who may have even less time to engage in physical activity.

Being active is good for mind, body and soul. Action for Happiness have put together a calendar for April which includes some simpler steps that may better fit in around a busy life of working and caring. You can download a larger image here.

If you want to take part in Carers Active April, you can sign up on the Carers UK website and receive:
  • A Carers Active April kickstarter pack
  • Weekly online physical activity sessions throughout April
  • Helpful ideas, tips and links during the month
You can also read more about Signpost's own active groups here.

Your future

There are a number of resources and events that may be useful for those of you thinking about returning to work, changing jobs or even setting up your own business or charity. A selection will be featured each month, below.

The Open University Carers Scholarship Fund

Looking for a fresh start or to go back into study? It’s never too late! The Open University’s Carers Scholarship Fund is the very first of its kind in the UK. They have already provided the equivalent of 90 full Open University scholarships to carers so they get the chance to study, develop their sense of identity outside the caring role and retrain towards seeking new employment.

They aim to make a further 20 scholarships available in the 2022/2023 academic year, with six scholarships reserved for applicants aged 25 and under.

To qualify, you need to be a carer who cares for an average of 15 hours a week, or have been a carer in the last two years, who cared for an average of 15 hours a week, but are no longer a carer due to bereavement.

Applications close midnight 24th June 2022.
