Defra public consultation: Environment Act 2021 targets

On 16 March the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) launched a public consultation about its plans for new environmental targets under the Environment Act 2021. Defra is seeking views on its proposed targets, and the consultation is open until Wednesday 11 May.

The Environment Act 2021 required the government to set at least one long-term target in each of the following areas:

  • Air quality
  • Biodiversity
  • Water
  • Resource efficiency and waste reduction.
Additionally, targets will be set for fine particulate matter (PM2.5) air pollution and species abundance.

Climate Change Levy increase from 1 April 2022

The Climate Change Levy (CCL) is an environmental tax imposed by the government on taxable commodities as a cost signal to reduce carbon emissions.

The CCL rates change from 1st April 2022. This is due to the Government rebalancing the rates to reflect the lowering carbon impact of electricity in comparison to gas consumption. This means the gas CCL rates continue to increase. The aim is for electricity and gas charges to be 1:1 ratio by 2025.

Support required for local schools to recycle

Could your business support a school in Camden to recycle more and waste less? Waste is one of the School Climate Charter commitments, but some schools do not have recycling bins in classrooms or on their school grounds.

We are looking for local businesses who:

  • Have internal recycling bins they no longer require due to move out, change in contracts or are surplus
  • Can provide financial support to help schools purchase bins

Getting involved could help fulfil your Camden Climate Pledge commitments.

Our case study on climate action in Camden this month is on Refugee Community Kitchen - an organisation serving food to homeless, rough sleepers, people in food poverty, people with mental health issues, drug issues and people who just need connection.

Refugee community kitchen was set up in response to the refugee crisis in Northern France in 2015 and they are still there today. They have now served over 3.5 million meals all prepared by amazing teams of volunteers.
