Feedback on Delivery Methods for IAD Workshops

We are interested in hearing your feedback on your experience of attending in person and online IAD workshops this year.

This will help us to plan workshops for the new academic year and shape our provision of both online and on campus delivery.

We would be grateful if you could complete this short questionnaire - https://edin.ac/3qqzSRW

New Research Staff Workshops

We have a new workshop running this semester:

The Strategic Researcher - 20/04/2022

Are you wanting to get a grant, but not sure how to approach it strategically? Or despite getting the grant and getting the research done, do you find it hard to achieve the publication outputs? And if you do publish, how strategic are you about it –do you just do the next paper on the list or do you think about which one will help with your next grant or be read by more people or have greatest impact?

Then in relation to the team you work in, are you being as productive as possible, for example using all team members or colleagues in a way that increases your publication output and theirs? And finally, do you use your limited resources (eg statisticians, senior researchers, editors etc) in the most effective way possible? This workshop is ideally suited for research teams, collaborators or co-authors, although all researchers will find it useful.

MANTRA Online Learning

Research Data Management Training, or MANTRA, is a self-paced, online course for those embarking on a digital research project, in particular University of Edinburgh postgrads to skill themselves up in terms of good practice in data management techniques. Topics include data management plans, effective organisation of data and files, and archiving and sharing research data at the end of a project.

As part of an ongoing update to MANTRA, six of the eight training modules have now been updated in order to refresh content and introduce new concepts and topics to better reflect current research data management practices and conventions.

Our most recent update is the new Unit 6: ‘Keeping research data safe’, which replaces the original ‘Storage and security’ unit covering how to store research data effectively, including keeping backups and methods to safeguard data. The new unit updates that content, and introduces a number of new topics including data classification, networked and cloud storage, password management tools, data access controls, transferring files securely, and working remotely.

In addition to this latest update, over the past year we have also reviewed and updated a further three modules: Data management planning; Organising data; and FAIR sharing and access. (FAIR sharing means making your data findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable.) Each unit has been refreshed to include new images, videos and links to further reading to ensure they remain relevant and interesting to anyone looking to learn more about the important research skill of research data management.

Developing your Leadership as a Researcher

Over the last two years, researchers have faced considerable disruption to their research and ways of working.  Recognising that everyone has been affected differently, the IAD and ERO worked with collaborators at 64 Million Artists to produce this online resource.  Designed to support researchers to focus on their research and priorities following this time of disruption, it has been created by leadership development experts, drawing on the wealth of knowledge they have from working in academia.
