News from ReWAGE

ReWAGE’s work to engage policymakers ‘behind the scenes’ is starting to come to fruition, reflected in recent conversations about how it can provide evidence to support the development of the Women and Work All-Party Parliamentary Group's next annual report, and expertise to the Government’s Flexible Working Taskforce. More details to follow in a later edition of the IER newsletter.

ReWAGE’s experts have also been busy, with two of the group publishing books on current ‘hot issues’ in the world of work.
Professor Alan Felstead’s new book, Remote Working: A Research Overview, looks at the explosion in homeworking over the last two years, and what impact this shift in the location of work has had on the lives of millions of employees, the organisations which employ them and the societies in which they live. It also looks to a post-pandemic future in which work is carried out remotely or partly off-site – either at home, in the local café, restaurant or bar, or while moving from place to place.
This continuing shift in how and where we work means that management and good employment practices are more relevant than ever, and the new Handbook on Management and Employment Practices provides up-to-date coverage on the contribution of management and employment practices to the health and wellbeing of workers. Co-authored by Professor Kevin Daniels, ReWAGE’s expert on organisational behaviour, the handbook focuses on recent management developments in key areas of leadership - change management, employee well-being, managing disabilities, work-life interfaces, and emerging challenges.

Don’t miss your chance to inform UK Government research and innovation policies

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has launched the first government survey of the UK-wide research and innovation workforce.

We ask anyone in the diverse occupations that are vital to innovation and research in the UK to complete it to offer better data for policy decisions that impact this whole workforce. The survey is now live and you can complete it online here

Beyond Your Limits: employability programme for young people in care

On 11th April 2022, Dr Sally Wright will volunteer as a mock interview panellist for the University of Warwick's Beyond Your Limits employability programme. The programme, created by young people, with the support of the EY Foundation and CareTech Foundation, is targeted at 16-19 year olds in care.

The programme focuses on skills and paid work experience, mentoring , a bursary and holistic support tailored to each young person's needs. The programme is delivered in bite-sized chunks around education. Along with two other panellists, Sally will act as a mock interviewer on the third day of the programme. The programme at Warwick is being managed by the University's Social Inclusion Group.

Researching active labour market policy and employability-support

On 21 March 2022, Dr Sally Wright gave a talk at a workshop hosted by the People, Organisations and Work (POWI) Research Centre at De Montfort University on 'Where next for research on active labour market policy and employability-support programmes?'

The workshop brought together researchers and policy makers in the field of active labour market policy to explore prospects for change on offer to the traditional 'work-first' approaches, including those outside government-funded payments. Co-authored with Dr Sally-Anne Barnes, Sally presented findings from their paper, 'Capturing the journey of the long-term unemployed into the labour market'.
