Fifth Sunday of Lent
On this Fifth Sunday of Lent, there is a change of mood in our Lenten journey as we enter the two week period known as Passiontide. We reflect on our faith and trust in Christ, who by his death on the cross brings us everlasting life.
In the Old Testament reading Isaiah 43.16-21 the prophet has words of comfort, encouragement and hope, as we continue to face the challenges of the spiritual wilderness. Even in the desert we see signs of new life and growth. We also find this theme of encouragement in Paul’s letter to the Philippians; for while the Christian life may not always be easy, we still ‘press on towards the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus’. Philippians 3.4b-14
In our Gospel Reading John 12.1-8 Mary anoints Jesus at Bethany. After Jesus raises Lazarus, there is a joyful feast for Jesus, Lazarus and the disciples. During this meal Mary anoints Jesus’ feet and wipes them with her hair, in an act of self giving love and gratitude. It is these events which prefigure Christ’s Passion and remind us of our call to humble service to one another.
The Blessing of St Patrick’s Breastplate
Christ be with me, Christ be within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort, and restore me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend or stranger.
A prayer for Ukraine
God of peace and justice,
we pray for the people of Ukraine today.
We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons.
We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow,
that your Spirit of comfort would draw near to them.
We pray for those with power over war or peace,
for wisdom, discernment and compassion
to guide their decisions.
Above all, we pray for all your precious children, at risk and in fear,
that you would hold and protect them.
We pray in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Amen
