the word: Step By Step Along the Journey
by the Rev. Dennis j Parker
Fellow travelers along the way!

We have been slowly working our way toward a time when we can gather again in community while still providing safety and conscious caution for the protection and health of all of us.  On this coming Sunday, (Palm Sunday, April 10th) we will take another cautious step toward the future.  With discussion and guidance from our clergy and vestry (and with the strong encouragement of our Bishop, Diana) we will return to community participation in the Holy Eucharist under both kinds.  Our “common cup” is a sacramental reminder that we are all one body in Christ.  Our communion vessels - bread bowl, and chalice [as well as our crystal goblet] for consecrated bread and wine and unfermented juice of the grape contain the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist in both of its forms.  Historically, a silver metal chalice has been used in which fermented wine is placed and blessed to become the blood of Christ, the cup of salvation.  While it is true that both forms of the Eucharistic meal contain the “full and sufficient” form of the Lord’s Supper – the Anglican understanding is that both of those forms should be available to God’s people gathered at God’s table to share the sacred meal left for us by our Savior, Jesus the Christ.

In an abundance of caution and desire to protect each other from the ravages of the Covid19 virus, and under the guidance of +Diana our bishop diocesan, we have been receiving communion only under the form of bread.  It should be noted that by using fermented alcohol, and a pure silver metal cup, the possibility of bacterial or viral transmission of germs is lessened to a miniscule percentage.  Many of us have been longing for that time when we would be able to once again share in the common cup at the Eucharistic celebration, and that time has come.

The clergy will have the consecrated bread and wine at the foot of the steps in our chancel and God’s people will be free to receive communion in either or both forms.  At this time, to further reduce the chance of transmission of any viral or bacterial germ, we are asking that you receive from the cup only by drinking directly as it is guided to your lips – and not by “intinction” or the dipping of the bread into the cup.  The suggested process for receiving the Eucharist is that you remove one side of your mask as you consume the consecrated bread and then move to the clergy person holding the cup and both will take the cup by the stem and you would then guide to your mouth and consume the amount of wine that is to your level of comfort and then guide the cup back to the clergy person and replace your mask prior to returning to your pew.  This may be a bit awkward at first; and we will gain confidence in the process as we proceed through a period of re-acclimation.  Again, we wish to stress that either form of the Holy Eucharist contains the full benefit of both forms, so we encourage you to proceed with this community step at the level that is of most comfort for you and your families.

Should you have further questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to any vestry member or to AJ, Tracy, and Dennis j. who will be happy to address your concerns going forward.

Garden Plants for Chapel
After two years on Zoom we will be creating a garden in the chapel at Saint David’s for the overnight watch from the end of the Maundy Thursday service until Good Friday. Please look around your house and garden for potted plants big and small, flowering or greenery, that you can bring to the chapel to create a space for prayer and contemplation. Bring plants to the chapel on Wednesday, April 13th between 4:30 and 6:30 pm. Plan to pick up your plants on Friday morning. Watching with Christ--in remembering that he went with his disciples to the garden to pray after the Last Supper, we watch with him through the night.
Overnight Vigil in the Garden

Keep vigil in the Chapel garden from
8pm Maundy Thursday, April 14th
to
8am Good Friday, April 15th

Online sign up available  at tinyurl.com/2p8fs5pr. Physical sign up available on the cork board outside the office.

Holy Week Church Clean Up Party
Sunday, April 10th at 11:15
Since folks will be back in the building for Holy Week and Easter(!) it's time to bring back our traditional Church Cleanup Party on Palm Sunday after the service. Please email juniorwarden@saintdavidpdx.org if you want to join in. By serving together, we'll get to connect with each other and celebrate the fact that many of us can worship together in person again.
Stations of the Cross
Good Friday (April 15) at 3:00 pm

At 3:00 pm on Good Friday (April 15) in the main sanctuary we'll walk the Way of the Cross together with the fourteen stations, which recollect moments from the path Jesus walked from persecution to death. For each of these stations, members of our community will share brief meditations or reflections in visual art, spoken word, or song.

These can be very simple! A brief reflection on what the station means to you, a personal story that connects with it, a poem, an image, an action that engages us as participants. You are of course welcome to use the text from the Book of Occasional Services or other texts of deep meaning to you.
