New preschool coming to Battle Ground High School

Battle Ground Public Schools is preparing to launch a new preschool. Starting next September, Battle Ground Preschool will initially offer a morning session from 8:30-11:00 a.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at Battle Ground High School. An open house will be held on the evening of April 13 for interested families.

The new preschool will be modeled after the popular Prairie Preschool program on the Prairie High School campus. There, high school students studying child development are able to work with preschool students, including children with disabilities. “It’s not like we’re just babysitting,” said Maxine Kellum, a senior at Prairie who is in her first semester working in the program. “We’re actually learning about brain development and how kids grow up.”

Learn more about the preschool program by visiting the district website.

Future Chefs challenge cooks up fun for 3rd and 4th graders

Eight 3rd and 4th graders cooked up a (delicious) storm in the Prairie High School kitchen as part of Sodexo's Future Chefs challenge this month. More than 150 students from around the district submitted recipes based on their favorite movie, TV show or book.

Congratulations to the winners:
1st place - Miradi Ackler, Maple Grove Primary (Fancy Nancy Bacon Balsamic Grilled Cheese)
2nd place - Ella Kohlenberger, Tukes Valley Primary (Hobbit Tots)
3rd place - Rachael Place, Captain Strong Primary (Kronk's Spinach Puffs)

You can download a PDF with all of the finalist's recipes and watch a video from the competition on the Battle Ground Public Schools YouTube channel.

BGPS’ Board of Directors conducted a regular board meeting on March 28. Highlights are in this week's BG Board, Briefly. Archived video of board meetings is available on the district website. The next regular board meeting will be held on April 11 at 6:00 p.m.

Middle school sports rollout continues with first cross country meets

The rollout of middle school sports continued this week with the first cross country meets held at Battle Ground and Prairie high schools. Runners completed a 1.5-mile timed course, crossing the finish line to the cheers of a crowd that celebrated first and last place with the same enthusiasm. Cross country is a sport that pits athletes against themselves as much as other runners. Coaches say they're using this season as an opportunity to encourage students to persevere and follow through, no matter where they end up. The launch of middle school sports will continue after Spring Break, with boys soccer matches starting Wednesday, April 13 at District Stadium. Girls soccer will start April 25, along with a second season of Cross Country. Registration is still open through Family ID. Schedules and information on signing up is available on the district website.

Prairie High School robotics team places 2nd at regional competition

Congratulations to the Cloverbots robotics team and Prairie High School teacher Todd Ferris for finishing 2nd in the First Robotics regional competition at the Oregon State Fairgrounds last weekend. The team comprises high school students from across Clark County. The Rapid React competition tasked teams with creating a robot that can pick up balls and toss them through a hoop. The machine also had to be able to climb a Jacob's Ladder at the end of the team-based competition. The Cloverbots' 2nd place finish was out of 28 teams from Oregon and Washington competing in the round-robin style tournament. You can view a video of the final round of the competition on the First Robotics Competition YouTube channel.
