Taking the Artist Route! James Castle House and Historic Artists’ Homes & Studios Bring Back Virtual Road Trip Across the United States

Boise, ID – The James Castle House in Boise, Idaho and the Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios (HAHS) program, a coalition of more than 50 museums that were the homes and working studios of American artists, are hitting the (virtual) road once again. Join us as we adventure into the homes and studios of six remarkable American artists. From Malvern, Pennsylvania, to Great Falls, Montana, we'll discover the places and spaces that supported six artists in the creation of thousands of artworks beginning on April 18, 2022.

Kicking off this six-part virtual road trip in Malvern, Pennsylvania, we'll explore the handcrafted studio of designer Wharton Esherick. Traveling from Pennsylvania to West Palm Beach, Florida, we'll tour the home and tropical gardens of sculptor Ann Norton. Next, we'll stop in Buena Vista, Georgia to investigate self-taught artist Eddie Owens Martin and his visionary art environment known as Pasaquan. From there, we'll adventure into the desert home of painter Georgia O’Keeffe in Abiquiú, New Mexico. Continuing to Joshua Tree, California, we’ll delve into the life and work of sculptor Noah Purifoy. Finally, we'll conclude this journey in Great Falls, Montana at the log home of the original “cowboy artist” C.M. Russell.

Today, each of these artists’ homes and studios are managed by organizations committed to preserving, protecting, and providing access for visitors. This virtual series is accessible to anyone worldwide with a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Each stop will provide participants with a palpable feeling of "being onsite”, coupled with photos, artworks, visual tours of each space, and a question-and-answer period.

The Artists’ Homes & Studios Virtual Road Trip 2022, a six-part virtual series beginning April 18, 2022, and running through September 14, 2022, is presented by the James Castle House and the Historic Artists' Homes and Studios program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Events are offered virtually and free of charge upon registration. Live American Sign Language (ASL) is provided.

About the Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios Program
Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios (HAHS), a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, is a coalition of 55 sites that were the homes and working studios of American artists. The program aims to preserve the nation’s legacy of creativity in the visual arts and to inspire meaningful personal experiences at authentic creative places.

HAHS is deeply committed to representing the full breadth and diversity of our country’s artistic legacy through preserved places nationwide. The network is proactively ensuring that it will tell a fuller story of those artists who have traditionally been underrepresented for their contributions to our cultural heritage including people of color, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and Indigenous, self-taught, and women artists.
