CfP: Generation Asia Conference 2022 

NIAS and the Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Institute for Foreign Languages at the University of Iceland are inviting proposals for individual papers for our Generation Asia 2022 Nordic NIAS Council (taking place from 22 - 26 August) as well as applications for the PhD workshop (25 - 26 August).  

About the conference:

How is generational change transforming society, culture and politics across Asia? Does a creative, iconoclastic Generation Z pose a major challenge to traditional hierarchies and values? What is the impact of demographic change in countries with a rapidly aging population? Is there something we can learn from Asian traditions of intergenerational exchange? These and many other intriguing questions arise from the theme of the 2022 NNC conference.

CfP: Ph.D. workshop 25-26 August 2022

We will be running a Ph.D. workshop in conjunction with the 2022 NNC Conference. The Ph.D. workshop is open to students currently enrolled for a doctoral degree. Applications are welcome from students of any nationality who are enrolled at any university. However, we do prioritise applicants affiliated with member institutions of the Nordic NIAS Council. 

While we hope to receive some applications on topics related to the conference theme of Generation Asia, we accept proposals in any fields of Asian studies. We expect to enroll around 12 students in the workshop, who will be expected to be present for all workshop sessions, and be ready to provide detailed feedback on the papers presented. The main focus of the workshop is on intensive review of student papers, but additional sessions will be included on career developments and getting published. Following the same format as our very successful 2020 and 2021 NNC PhD workshops, each paper will be discussed by two established academics, as well as one student peer discussant.

In order to apply for the workshop, you'll need to submit a title, an abstract (should not exceed 300 words) outlining your PhD topic, as well as a CV, a cover letter explaining which year you are in the PhD programme, and a recommendation letter from your supervisor. You should present a paper based on one chapter of your thesis. If accepted you will need to submit a full paper of 6,000 to 10,000 words, one month before the conference. Of course, participants in the Ph.D. workshop are also welcome to take part in the conference, if both their proposals accepted.

International Responses to the Uyghur Issue

NIAS is delighted to invite to this on- site  lecture with Julie Yu-Wen Chen, Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of Helsinki in Finland. talking about the international repsonses to the Uyghur issue in China. In this presentation, Julie Yu-Wen Chen examines Uyghur’s international activism, revisits the legitimacy issue of the Uyghur cause for self-determination and survey uneven international responses to it, from states to individuals.

Book Prize Nomination 

We're delighted to announce our recent book 'Deities and Divas. Queer Ritual Specialists in Myanmar, Thailand and Beyond' edited by Peter A. Jackson and Benjamin Baumann for the 2022 Ruth Benedict Book Prize of the Association of Queer Anthropology. 

The Ruth Benedict Book Prize is presented each year at the American Anthropological Association’s annual meeting to acknowledge excellence in a scholarly book written from an anthropological perspective about a topic that engages issues and theoretical perspectives relevant to LGBTQ studies.   

'Deities and Divas' is the first book to trace commonalities between queer and religious cultures in Southeast Asia and the West. It reveals how modern gay, trans and spirit medium communities all emerge from a shared formative matrix of capitalism and new media and it provides fascinating new perspectives in transnational cultural, religious and queer studies.

Unravelling the Interplay between Communication Technology and Society

Think China and the Centre for Tracking Society, Department of Communication at the University of Copenhagen invite to this China Talks Lecture with Ran Wei, Professor at the School of Journalism and Communication, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Ran Wei will  present findings from two large-scale comparative studies on consumption of mobile news and diffusion and impacts of COVID-19 misinformation in four of Asia’s IT savvy societies (Hong Kong, Mainland China, Singapore and Taiwan). Tibetian Materialities

The Asian Dynamics Initiative (ADI) at the University of Copenhagen is hosting a workshop on Tibetan Materialities. It will take place at the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies, University of Copenhagen over the course two days on 12-13 May 2022 and is part of a larger effort to create an international academic forum focused on collaborative, critical thinking and writing for the purpose of shaping new conceptual frameworks, finding synergies for future collaborations, producing conference papers, and writing academic outputs related to Tibetan materialities

China’s Foreign Policy Contradictions

Think China and the Centre for Military Studies, Department of Political Science at the University of Copenhagen invite to another China Talks Lecture, this time hosting Tim Rühlig,  Research Fellow at the German Council on Foreign Relations. Tim will present his newest book “China’s Foreign Policy Contradictions: Lessons from China’s R2P, Hong Kong and WTO Policy”, published in 2022 with Oxford University Press. Drawing on an ethnographic study he demonstrates how competing sources of Chinese Communist Party legitimation coupled with a fragmented institutional structure of the political economy of the party-state explain contradictions in China’s foreign policy. He will further discuss implications for the international order.

Co-organized by  the Department of Communication, University of Copenhagen, Department of Politics and Society, Aalborg University, and Technologies in Practice group and IT University of Copenhagen this international conference  is a joint opening conference for the Network Categorizing People and Resources in Contemporary China (CatCh) and the Moving Data - Moving People (MDMP) project on mobility and China’s social credit system taking place on 18.05.2022 - 20.05.2022. 

The conference aims to provide an open interdisciplinary forum for discussing the potential of categorization and configuration as original and innovative approaches to study social life, relations, practices, and governance in China. Against a backdrop of increasing digitalization and strained relations of trust, how are technologies of categorization and configuration reproduced and transformed in social relationship and digital governance?
