Note from Dr. Cannon
April 25, 2022
Dear Breton Downs Families,
This Wednesday, April 27, is Administrative Professionals Day. Every day, but especially on this day, we celebrate Mrs. Rogers and Mrs. Sheridan. Please join the Breton Downs staff and me in thanking these two wonderful ladies for the welcoming, caring, and compassionate approach they demonstrate to support our families, students, and staff.
Earth Day Read Alouds
Last Friday we celebrated Earth Day with classroom lessons, activities, and read alouds. I visited every classroom on Thursday and Friday and read the book The Boy Who Grew a Forest: The True Story of Jadav Payeng to students in kindergarten through grade 5. I loved the opportunity to spend time reading with each class!
Save the Dates: Miniwanca Munchies are returning!!
Looking for a delicious treat after school? Look no further!! Our Breton Downs 4th grade students will be selling $1 treats after school each Friday in May to raise funds for Camp Miniwanca in the Fall of 2022. Look for more information starting the week of May 2.
5th Grade Parent/Guardian Night at the Middle School
Fifth Grade Parent/Guardian Night will take place on Wednesday, May 18th from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at the middle school. This is a parent/guardian-only event, as students will be visiting the middle school on their transition day. If you have any questions about this event, please contact Mr. Dykhouse at jdykhous@egrps.org.
Spring Concert on May 19
Spring is in the air and the EGRPS Elementary Music teachers, Mrs. Kline and Mrs. Pugia, have been working with students to prepare a performance that showcases their learning throughout the school year. We look forward to welcoming families to this event on Thursday, May 19 at 2:00 p.m. in the Breton Downs gymnasium. Please see this letter from Mrs. Kline for more information including how to watch via livestream.
Smartwatch and Cell Phone Reminder
We understand that Smartwatches and cell phones are an easy way for families to communicate with their children. Please help us to maintain a distraction-free learning environment by reminding your child that any smartwatches and cell phones brought to school must remain off and in their backpack while on school grounds. For more information, please click here to review Board Policy 8320 and 8320-R.

Fourth Grade Mini Market
The annual Fourth Grade Mini Market will be held in the gym on the afternoon of May 10. This event is open to grades K-5 and a favorite of our students. The fourth graders have worked diligently in applying their economic skills in the production of their own goods. Students in grades K-5 may bring up to $5.00 in quarters to spend at the Mini Market when their class has an opportunity to visit. Parents and families who would like to attend are invited during the 2:30-3:00 window of time. We thank you in advance for adhering to this time frame, as it keeps the flow of traffic smooth for all. The Fourth Grade Team looks forward to this meaningful, real-world learning experience!

Class Placement for 2022-2023
One of our most important tasks is preparing the class lists for next year. I will meet with staff later this spring to begin student placements for the 2022-2023 school year. To guide us in this important process, we will follow the East Grand Rapids Board of Education Policy #8040:
To the extent possible, students are assigned to specific classes, grade levels, and teachers by the building Principal. In making assignments, Principals may consider (with input from teachers and parent(s)/guardian(s) the following factors: (i) individual student needs; (ii) learning styles of students; (iii) teaching styles; (iv) gender ratio; (v) heterogeneous make-up of the class; (vi) class size; and (vii) special education needs.
Your input is valuable. If you wish to contribute information about your child, please fill out the optional Student Placement Information Google Form found here. Please do not request a specific teacher as many factors go into the placement decision and we have yearly changes in teaching assignments. This form needs to be completed by Friday, April 29, 2022.
