 Watch Hall of Fame video

More than 150 people helped the University of Arizona School of Journalism honor 13 individuals and one family during our second Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The April 9 event, held at the Center for Creative Photography, was emceed by Mariana Dale (Class of '14), a reporter for the National Public Radio station in Los Angeles (KPCC).

Inductees were Edith Auslander (’61), H. Darr Beiser (’76), Bobbie Jo Buel (’79), Lynn DeBruin (’84), Carmen Duarte (’80), David Fitzsimmons (’77 Fine Arts), Patty (Weiss) Gelenberg (’71), Dan Hicks (’84), James W. Johnson (’61), the Kramer familyNicholas Proffitt (’68), George RidgeErnest Sotomayor (’77) and Michele Stephenson (’66). DeBruin, Proffitt and Ridge were honored posthumously.

     

Dr. Cecil Schwalbe, scientist and friend of the J-School, dies at 80

Dr. Cecil Robert Schwalbe, a noted herpetologist who let journalism students practice their interviewing and photography skills during his talks on reptiles and amphibians, died April 3 in Tucson. Schwalbe, husband of Professor Carol Schwalbe, was 80.

A celebration of his life is set for Saturday, May 14. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Cecil to the Cold-Blooded Research Fund in the School of Natural Resources and the Environment.

Student news 

 

 Undergrad Jane Florance had a front-page story in The Arizona Republic on April 17. She wrote about a Catholic Church in Phoenix celebrating its first mass three years after a devastating fire. Read the story.

• Undergrad Vic Verbalaitis published two stories for the Arizona Daily Star's This is Tucson: "Bringing astronomy to Tucson's streets" and on a "stunning purple mushroom never documented in Arizona."

• M.A. student Vanessa Lucero received a National Association of Hispanic Journalists internship at CNBC.

• Undergrad Gloria Gomez, our Don Bolles Reporting Fellow covering the Legislature in Phoenix, has written 60 stories in collaboration with the Arizona Mirror this semester. Read her work.

• Undergrad Karl Yares received the sportsmanship award for his division at the National Wheelchair Basketball Association intercollegiate championship.

• M.A. student Mar Ruiz was awarded the NAHJ Rubén Salazar Scholarship.

• Undergrad Kate Ewing wrote a story on Skip, UAPD's bomb-sniffing dog.

• M.A. student Katya Mendoza wrote an opinion column for the Arizona Daily Star, "Women shouldn't be only ones responsible for birth control."

• Undergrad Allie Skaggs, who plays for the UA softball team, tied a school record with three homers in a doubleheader sweep over UTEP on April 19. Story
 

Faculty news 

 

  Maggy Zanger was a guest on KCUR Up to Date in Kansas City to discuss why journalists go to war. She spent six years reporting and training journalists in Iraq and Afghanistan. Listen to the broadcast here

Jessica Retis was recognized at the UA Student Success Awards with the Outstanding Mentor Award and Inclusive Excellence Award. 

Liliana Soto, along with Kendal Blust ('16), spoke on a March 30 panel, "Fronterizas: Reporting on the Border." 

Jeannine Relly participated remotely in a journalism development program for media and communication educators in Kolkata, India.

Ruxandra Guidi wrote about her experience during the Venezuela Saudita for The Baffler. Read the story here

Susan E. Swanberg is volunteering as a judge again this year for the American Society for Human Genetics (ASHG) 2022 DNA Day Essay Contest. She will act as a round 2 judge reviewing 18-19 student essays on an issue of importance to the genetics research community. Swanberg has volunteered for ASHG for the last six years. ALUMNI NEWS


Teagan Rasche ('19) joined the Global Saskatoon in Saskatoon, Canada, where she will cover news and sports. She previously worked at CHAT TV in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada.

Justin Pierce ('20) is joining AZ Family in Phoenix as a weekend morning producer. He had been a producer at WBNG TV  in Johnson City, New York.

Nicole Santa Cruz ('08) had her first major story in ProPublica, "The invisible hand of Steve Twist." She's a member of the school's Journalism Advisory Council.

Janice Yu ('13) left her position at Fox 5 Atlanta, where she worked as a reporter/fill-in anchor. She will announce her next work plans soon.

W.H. Mefford ('68) has published a novel, "The Stalin Stain."

IN MEMORIAM

Grant E. Smith Jr. ('65) died Jan. 20. He was a staff member at the Detroit Free Press when it won a Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the 1967 riots.
