CLUB REPORTER

FEATURING

Highway to Excellence

by JILL MORRISON, DTM
#clubreporter
A visit to our district’s only advanced club, Highway to Excellence (HTE) was a trip into the extraordinary talking about the notable things in our life.

In the first prepared speech, Diana talked about change in life, reminding us that it is inevitable. And as her husband, Bob, reminded her, change – it happens. Changes in our life can be either good or bad, planned or unplanned but one thing is for sure, it is inevitable. Because it is inevitable, we should embrace it, plan for it, and make it happen. She talked about changes in her life, but a notable one was when she joined Toastmasters  where she made many friends. In the second speech, Chris gave us a speech on aiming high and decisions of a lifetime. He pointed out we make hundreds, if not thousands, of decisions in a day but one decision he made in Sept 1990 stands out. He joined the Air Force during Desert Storm/Desert Shield. This decision helped him learn all basic geometry, squares who were also shirts, and spatial awareness, found in his clothes closet. He also learned about relationships over foosball, and finally, the ability to break dance (a result of a failed circuit breaker) resulting a new nickname, RainMain.  But most notably,

that decision gave him an emotional response felt during the Pledge of Allegiance for all the men and women who fought for our freedom

We moved our notable discussions onto table topics. Brent discussed his how parents gave him spirituality and the will to live to as notable memories from his childhood. Alberto told us how he wanted to be remembered as the greatest manager of all time and his desire to reach and help more people. And finally, Jerry told us how being a toastmaster makes him extraordinary, giving him the privilege of being a leader in the club and district level as well being a leader at work.

In true HTE fashion, we heard notable evaluations where we were reminded that extraordinary speeches include personal stories and the ability to make the listener feel true emotions.

As always, a visit to HTE helps all want to achieve that next step in the path to being extraordinary. If you want to visit, HTE will be hosting an open house on Thursday, June 16th at the Grapevine La Madeline’s at 7pm. Feel free to end your toastmaster’s year with Excellence too.
