THS 2022 Spring Newsletter

Dispatches from the President’s Desk

Greeting to our members.

We have certainly been busy at The Tubac Historical Society this quarter! We held our first membership meeting at our new headquarters in January, and hosted a Breakfast with History with speaker Dan Judkins. In February, we participated in the annual Tubac Festival of the Arts by selling festival posters and giving tours of our new headquarters, and we sealed our Tubac Time Capsule (thank you Gail Drummond for organizing this project), which is on display at the Tubac Presidio State Park. We opened our “Welcome to the Ranch” exhibit at the Tubac Presidio State Park in March. In April we held our first Piano Concert fund raising event, and our grand finale event of the season our Annual Picnic held at the historic San Cayetano Ranch! A big THANK YOU to our events committee and all the volunteers who helped make these events happen! We are also excited to say “Congratulations” to board member Betsy Fearnow for her selection as one of Santa Cruz County’s’ “Shining Stars”, which was announced March 25th, 2022, in the Nogales International newspaper. Betsy was honored for her volunteer work at The Tubac Historical Society. This is a well-deserved honor, and we are grateful to Betsy for all the hard work she puts in at The THS. If you missed the article, you can read it on our website, ths-Tubac.org.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of The THS I want to thank all of our volunteers and members for making this season such an exciting and successful one. We could not do it without you! We are all looking forward to some R&R this summer as we plan next season’s events.
All the best!

Andrea Miritello, President

Annual Picnic

The Annual Members Picnic was held at San Cayetano Ranch. Each of the 50 attendees received a commemorative drink tumbler with the San Cayetano logo. The ranch proved a perfect venue, with good food, a fun talk by Peachy and our lovely host, Elizabeth even made a special welcoming banner.

Piano Concert

A special fundraising event proved successful for the Historical Society. Dr. Kirill Gliadkovsky performed on the piano an intimate setting for an audience of members and friends. Dr. Gliadkovsky served on the faculty of the University of Southern California, and as head of the Southern Utah University among other positions. He made his first concert appearance in Moscow at age six. Both his daughters perform, following in their parent’s footsteps.

Breakfast With History Is Back!

Our First event of 2022 was Breakfast with History on January 24, at the Tubac Golf Resort.  Dan Judkins, a local historian known to many of us, spoke on “Tubac Through the Centuries: Key Events in the history of Tubac”.   Approximately 28 attendees enjoyed a lovely buffet breakfast, followed by an enjoyable hour plus of Dan’s talk which left all of us with new information about our area.

This event was well-received and other Breakfasts with History are planned for the future.

Diane Brooks
Chair, Events Committee

History Bits
The Beginning of Anniversaries
Tubac is an important spot. Tubac is where the expedition officially launched that settled what would become the City of San Francisco. October 23, 1775, 240 people stood, received a blessing and a wish for safe journey. They would mount their horses, and ride north toward the large, calm San Francisco Bay. This year launches us into a series of anniversaries that will lead toward that October date.

We can’t tell you when the O’odham first occupied the Tubac area, though we know it was a long time before the Spanish arrived. The first mention of Tubac in Spanish documents was 1726. By that time, it was an O’odham village with large productive farm fields.
This year notes the anniversary of the establishment of a fort at Tubac. On June 2nd, 1752, 270 years ago, Tubac became the first permanent European settlement in Arizona

Establishment of a fort does not mean it was built. It was in early 1753 that the troops moved into San Ignacio de Tubac to call it home. Following the occupation of the presidio a village or pueblo rose just to the south. We also celebrate the second home of the Tumacácori mission. It was on March 19, the feast day of St Joseph, that the Tuba Presidio’s commander declared a new mission site where the Tumacácori National Historical Park now stands. Tumacácori would go from honoring the patron of the first Tumacácori mission, San Cayetano, and become San Jose de Tumacácori.

In 2024, we will begin the celebration of a number of consecutive anniversaries. The 250th anniversary of Anza’s first expedition to California starts in January. Often forgotten, this small expedition of soldiers, with Anza at the lead, would solve the puzzle of finding a route to safely take a large group of men, women and children to California.

In 2025 and 2026, we will celebrate the anniversary of the ambitious Anza Expedition which traveled first to Monterrey, and then continued into the San Francisco Bay. This will be the 250th anniversary, the semi-quincentennial, a word as daunting to say as the route was to travel. Brave women and men traveled through snow and cold and parched desert and made history.

During the next years we honor and remember those who came before. We hope that we may learn from their conflicts and difficulties and hope that the successful periods of cooperation can be our inspiration. By the time the 250th birthday of the United States comes to us in 2026, we hope the lessons remind us of what we began as…out of many we are one.
