New Statewide Cardiovascular Strategic Plan Released

The South Dakota Cardiovascular Collaborative finalized its 2022-2026 strategic plan in March 2022 and will begin priority setting, action planning, and plan implementation during their May 3-4 annual meeting (see below). Members will focus on advancing health equity, optimizing health through the prevention of chronic disease, improving response to acute cardiovascular incidents, and supporting disease management. The 2022-2026 strategic plan one-pager and additional Cardiovascular Collaborative resources can be viewed here

Register for the Cardiovascular Collaborative Annual Meeting

The South Dakota Cardiovascular Collaborative will be hosting its annual meeting virtually on May 3-4 from 9:00 am-1:00 pm CT each day. During the meeting, attendees will learn more about the newly released 2022-2026 Statewide Cardiovascular Strategic Plan and will break out into workgroups to identify priorities and begin action planning for each of the focus areas. If you have an interest or currently work on health equity, chronic disease prevention, response to acute cardiovascular incidents, or chronic disease management, this meeting is for you!

PRAMS Surveillance Report



The 2020 South Dakota Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) Data Report is now available. SD PRAMS provides a variety of data on maternal and infant health topics including prenatal care, substance use, infant sleep, chronic health conditions, breastfeeding, adverse childhood experiences, and more. New to this report are four-year trends for many of the health indicators.

2020 South Dakota Vital Statistics Report: A State and County Comparison of Leading Health Indicators

The 2020 South Dakota Vital Statistics Report is now available. The report contains state and county leading health indicators for vital statistics as well as detailed data on natality, infant mortality, mortality, marriage and divorce, and infectious diseases. 

The selected health statistics contained in the report are widely used by the Department of Health, other government agencies, and the public. This information has proven to be useful in determining trends in health status, planning health care services, and for making decisions about public health programs. It also fulfills diverse requirements in the business community and academic research.

The Health Behaviors of South Dakotans, 2020

The Health Behaviors of South Dakotans 2020 is now available. The report is based on data gathered from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and serves to measure the health risks of South Dakotans. The BRFSS is the world's largest telephone survey administered with help from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The survey is given in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, as well as three US territories to adults aged 18 years and older.

The survey consists of questions aimed at tracking and trending the prevalence of health behaviors and conditions over time.

Reducing an Unprecedented Rise in Syphilis Rates

In 2021, South Dakota had 874 syphilis infections (1050% 5-year median increase) and 16 congenital and four syphilitic stillbirths (700% 5-year median increase). The SD Department of Health has released a comprehensive explanation of risk factors, screening/treatment recommendations, and how local Disease Intervention Specialists (DIS) can assist.
