Dear friends / Queridos Amigos

(mais informação em Portuguese em baixo)

It has been a while and I hope you are well :)
As the world seemed to become saner
(but then within a split second it has gone even madder...)
The Karavan has gone back onto the road... or rather roads...
Brighton, Tel-Aviv, Lisbon, Aljezur, Sintra, Setubal,
and have just landed on the Azores Islands.

In the last years, I feel my work has become more of a mission,
with the state of the world, It feels like an effort has to be done to keep some sort of balance.
I hope it doesn't sound too pretentious because it doesn't feel like it's coming from that sort of place.
It is rather a search for balance and in itself, it brings me to many new encounters, new questions, collaborations, travels, trials, and errors.

So once again I invite you to join me on the road.
Friendship and creation seem to be important and powerful remedies in these tense days.
Hope our paths may cross again soon between workshops, performances, and new creations.

With sincere hope for peace and health in our bleeding world.

PS- the picture above is of me as a child on one of my father's sculptures.
Next month in May it will be a year since my father's 'departure' from this physical world.
I was invited to create and perform as an homage to him and his incredible artistic and human contribution in Tel-Aviv, Paris, and near Florance.

Come!

xxyael

Our Butoh retreat Rebirth in dance

in April at the blossoming Quinta Ten Chi - Sintra - Portugal

With Marlene Jobstl, Sara Pons, and Myself

Was a memorable and powerful experience. It was the first time that I was part of a retreat, teaching with 2 other Butoh practitioners and more than 30 students.
We have all learned so much, and in 4 days we managed to each create and present a solo, teach as much Butoh Buffet as we could, and direct a 3rd of the group in a site-specific Butoh performance.
WOW!
We have decided that It will now officially be a regular event, once or twice a year.
Probably for more than just 3 days so hope to see you there :)

A big thank you to Irene Alvarez that produced it all with such elegance!

Pela Nossa Pele

Dance Film, workshop & performance
in the azores Islands.

22 & 23rd April 17-20h Workshop- More info HERE

23rd at 21.30 Dance Film + Performative action- More info HERE

I have just landed on the Azores islands, everything is green and blue...
It should be an incredible location and like a virgin,
I will be touched by its powerful nature for the very first time :)
So much to discover, and fresh air to breathe.
Pela Nossa Pele = Our Skin (one of my 'mission' projects)
will tour in Faro- Teatro das Figuras 25&26th of May, Bristol-UK in June, Pistoia- Italy in July, and will travel around Brazil in October and in Macao- China in January 2023.

Pela Nossa Pele = Our Skin is a project that aims to reflect on the place where we live and to remember that we are Nature. A 36 minutes dance film created by Yael Karavan and Rita Vilhena and made in collaboration with film maker Francisca Manuel, performers Joana Castro, Thamiris Carvalho and Jim Clark, costume designer Carlota Lagido and sound designer Kino Sousa. Filmed in the wilderness of Coentral Grande, in Castanheira de Pêra, the artistic object is composed of images captured with micro and macro lenses of the skin of the trees, the veins of the rivers, and the bodies of the dancers, contradicting the separation that exists in urban society. The film observes and questions how we influence each other: Body-Earth, Earth-Body as it explores the transformation of the female body merging with the natural landscape. The boundaries between the performers' bodies and the landscape disappear, highlighting the continuity of our skin into the skin of the earth.

The project also includes a workshop with the local community towards a performative action with the intention of sensitizing and motivating the participants into critical thinking on the main climate-related themes of the project. The presentation of the film is thus accompanied by a performance that results from a 2-3 days workshop offered to the local community.

A Flor das Aguas
Espetaculo do teatro da fonte nova - Setubal
6-15 Maio Forum municipal Luisa Todi qui-sab 21h, dom 16h

Heart Beats

A site specific performance in Homage to my father Dani Karavan

on and with his 'Culture Square' at the centre of Tel-Aviv to comemorate one year since his 'departure' from this physical world.

Saturday 28th of May 18.30

in collaboration with dancers from the 'maslool'
professional Dance Program- Bikurey ha'Itim

As a child, my father, the late and great Human and Artist Dani Karavan, the creator of many public art works around the world, would ask me to go and play on his public art sculptures so that people would understand that they could and should interact with his work in order to get the experience he created for them. During the years his works of Art have become my abstract playgrounds and later in life, the inspiring sets where I had the honor to create site-specific performances around the world. Including Japan, Spain, Germany, Italy and France… and now for the first time in Tel-Aviv, part of a bigger program where people can visit his multiple art works around the city.

"Dentro deste corpo, existem várias coisas míticas que ainda dormem intactas. .... O trabalho é como escavá-las...” – Tatsumi Hijikata, fundador do Butoh

YAEL KARAVAN
Workshop -Butoh & Metamorphoses
2 and 3 of July
11h00 to 17h00
PRESENTATION
"Inside this one body, there are various mythic things that are still sleeping intact. ....The work is how to excavate them..." - Tatsumi Hijikata
Butoh is an avant-garde dance of transformation created at the end of the 50 in Japan. Karavan is sharing over 20 years of experience having worked with the founding members of Butoh Dance as well as 2nd and 3rd generation in Japan and Europe. Butoh is not a technique but a method and philosophy. The main elements that will be explored in the workshop are metamorphoses, dance through imagery, presence, awareness, and the tension between opposites. The aim is to free the body from its mundane preconceived set of gestures and movements and thus allowing us to access a deeper and more authentic essence of movement and archetypal expression. Questioning how Butoh can be translated into a European Body and why is Butoh not just relevant but extremely vital nowadays.

Protecting our environment and ourselves is of most importance and must be done now before it’s too late. As part of this wondrous nature we must have more empathy and collaborate.
