'Time & Light'
George Williams
At Outback Arts Gallery until 22 April
George Williams works in a range of art forms through which he expresses his Barkindji, Ngemba culture, including the most contemporary of forms, photography.
His nightscape photographs of the night sky take him out into the landscape at the quietest times, under the same stars of his mother’s and father’s country, and with the closest possible connection to himself.

Media release 11 April 2022
North West Hudson Pear Taskforce Update
Hudson Pear Task Force (HPTF) was established in the early 2000’s. This group consisted of relevant local government, state agencies, Miner associations, Landcare, landowners, and regional natural resource management bodies. The group meets twice a year to communicate and share information, lessons learnt and collaborate on ideas for the region. A Hudson Pear Management Plan was developed by the HPTF in 2006 and is currently under review.
The HPTF currently has been supporting a biological control approach by working with the NSW Department of Primary Industries. The biocontrol agent for Hudson pear (Cylindropuntia pallida), a cochineal bug, Dactylopius tomentosus ‘californica var. parkeri’ lineage, is one of six lineages which are being used to manage the eight invasive Cylindropuntia spp. in Australia. These cochineal species were imported from South America, a natural pest to various cacti species and has been released as biological agent to control Hudson pear.
The North West Hudson Pear Taskforce meet twice a year in Lightning Ridge. On the 5 May 2021 the HPTF met to discuss the following key topics (due to COVID-19 the HPTF have postponed meeting until early May this year):
• New incursions across the region and in neighbouring regions
• Cacti Business Plan opportunities & Future Strategic directions
• Hudson pear biocontrol mass rearing and monitoring updates
• North West Regional Cacti Control Coordinator update
• Surveillance and control programs underway
• Hudson pear Strategic Plan review.
Most recently Seen This Plant? Hudson Pear factsheet was sent out the rates notices to create a wider awareness and education around the serious consequences and its various harmful capability. Andrea Fletcher, Senior Biosecurity Officer, has received some “great feedback regarding the Seen this plant? Hudson Pear flyers that went with the Walgett Shire rates, has been a great success. We have all been receiving numerous calls”. These calls have led to Biosecurity Officers being able to correctly identify the cacti and engage with the landowner to actively control these incursions.
Seen it? Call us: Help protect our lands, plants and wildlife. If you spot any infestations of Hudson pear, please contact the Biosecurity Officer Walgett Shire Council 0428 462 060 or 0497 013 086 or NSW Biosecurity Helpline 1800 680 244.
To find out more about getting your hands on the biocontrol agent for Hudson pear, contact Walgett Shire Weed Biosecurity Officer Mat Savage on 0427 253 463 or more on the resources available contact NW Cacti Control Coordinator Jo Skewes on 0438 353 519 or go to https://www.northernslopeslandcare.com.au/cacti/resources.html
