Hameau Mission Statement

Hameau Farm captures and inspires the creative spirit with its unique studio and second floor deck with views of pastures and mountain landscapes. Friendly animals and nearby creeks provide unlimited sources for plein air painting, and the great food and camaraderie compel artists to return year after year. This retreat includes plein air painting for all mediums and levels, daily demos in the Hameau Barn Studio, individual instruction, critiques, free art supply samples, and personal plans.

We Have a Great Schedule in the Works!

Remember, we organize Hameau Artist Retreats 
around your registration.  

We need you to register now so we can finalize our itinerary for morning and field demonstrations, as well as excursions to other locations. Certain days may focus on specific levels or mediums, but all artists are welcome, including professionals.  
 

Basic Hameau Schedule

8:30-9:30 Breakfast - Meet your instructor, Susan Nicholas
9:30-10:30 Demos or free time plein air painting
10:30-1:00 Plein air painting with support from Susan
1:00-2:00 Lunch
2:00-5:00 Plein air painting on the farm or afternoon excursion with support from Susan
7:00-? Dinners are served in courses and last late into the evening

Tuesday

9:30 Demo: "Thumbnail Sketches" ~ Susan will demonstrate a useful technique for sketching in any medium, but with a focus on pastel painting.

Afternoon exploration of the Hameau Fields and vista views.

Wednesday

9:30 Demo: "Multiple Image Composition Studies" ~ Susan will demonstrate a useful technique for sketching in any medium, but with a focus on oil painting.

Afternoon outing to Kish Creek.

Thursday - FULL

9:30 Demo: "Exploring Light, Shadow, and Color" 

Free time painting - wherever you want!

Friday

9:30 Demo: "Understanding the Vista View" ~ Prepare for Jack's Mountain.

Afternoon outing to Jack's Mountain.

Saturday

9:30 Demo: "Capture the Skies with Susan" Explore the use of rich color as an underpainting. Prepare for the Sunset Paint Out.

We're continuing the tradition of the Sunset Paint Out with musician, Richard Sleigh, serenading the artists. The Sunset Paint Out will be followed by more music at dinner. We recommend professional artists take advantage of this event. Half-day registrations welcome. Fills fast!

Reserve Your Home Cooked Meals

Audrey Gay Rogers, the owner of Hameau Farm, and her helpers cook the wonderful, nutritious meals we eat during the Artist Retreat. She prides herself in presenting beautiful meals in a beautiful setting. Her goal is to provide sustenance for all the hungry painters and make them happy!

Anna Crane has been Susan's assistant for over ten years and has done an exceptional job. Susan credits her organizational skills in the success of recent Hameau Retreats. In 2014, Anna graduated from Penn State with a BFA in Drawing and Painting with Honors and a minor in Art History. Anna tracks the registration of all artists attending the retreat.
