Dear Reader,

We know that big topics like Medicare or making end-of-life plans don’t always make for the most fun read. Of course we write inspiring stories about staying active by playing pickleball for example, but we also write deeply researched series and guides on how to understand medical tests, write your will or how to give loved ones access to your finances when you are no longer able to manage them yourself. These topics are complicated and nuanced … and necessary. That is why Next Avenue is here. We don’t shy away from the tough topics.

It’s not uncommon for us to hear from readers that our reporting makes a difference in their lives. But this past year, we heard from so many of you that Next Avenue was a true lifeline — a resource that you relied on for fact-based, unbiased guidance for making some of life’s toughest decisions.

"I read your article on 'Understanding Laboratory Tests.' I'm 75. I have finally been able to put some order and understanding to the tests that have been done on me for the past twenty years. Before, I could read about individual tests but had no framework for them. Thank you. You're one in a million." — Richard W.

"My Mom (97 in Assisted Living) has constantly been after me to check out Medicare Advantage as she sees all the ads every day on TV. I printed out the article, highlighted the key points, and said ‘read this whenever you’re tempted by the ads’!!!! Then today, I was on a Zoom call with a good friend who is now 66. When he told me he was going to make a decision today about switching his Medicare to Medicare Advantage I shot him your article! What a great resource you are! Thank you"
