An orphan from the age of 8 years old, Joseph has had minimal education and spent years as a street kid, living off food he found in the rubbish and sleeping wherever he could.   Life was very difficult, so he went into the Ngong forest to gather wood to sell to make charcoal. Taking wood from the forest is forbidden but many do it to get a few shillings to live. He was caught and sent to jail. 

After being in jail Joseph met a man who took him to an art group who might help him. They recognised his talents. Marguerite on a visit to Nairobi saw a painting of Kibera (now hanging in her home) in the Ya Ya art shop and asked about the artist. The staff at WkW knew of him and invited him to the Centre. He was struggling, had no real home and carried his paintings on his bike. WkW offered to help by selling his paintings and share any advice they could offer. There union was a success, many paintings were sold to visitors and Joseph became established.  He now exhibits in all the galleries and at the Karen Blixen restaurant complex.   

Joseph is now one of Kenya’s prominent artists. He is married with a family and tutors art students too. Joseph is forever grateful for the encouragement and support WkW gave him so that he could continue to learn and to paint. We are incredibly pleased to have one of his paintings for auction. It’s his way of giving back.
