“Alleluia! Christ is risen!” “The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia!”
What a joyous celebration Easter was at St. Mark’s. It was wonderful to share our first Easter together.

As I mentioned last month, Easter’s joy cannot and should not be contained to just one Sunday. The good news of God’s great love and how that love restores us into relationship with God needs more than one day. This is why, except for the use of Alleluias, every Sunday is considered a little Easter. Every Sunday is a cause for rejoicing and celebrating the lavish abundance of God’s grace.

The Church, from a liturgical standpoint, devotes fifty days to Easter. This begins with Easter and ends with Pentecost. Pentecost derives from the Greek and literally means “fifty days.” We celebrate Pentecost as the birthday of the Church, when the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus’ followers in the appearance of tongues of fire (see Acts 2:1-13). They were then strengthened and empowered for their ministries. Sunday, 5 June is the Feast of Pentecost in 2022.

The instructions in the Book of Common Prayer remind us that the joyous “Alleluia!” is reserved for the Easter season. We read these words near the bottom of page 366: “from the Easter Vigil through the day of Pentecost “Alleluia, alleluia” may be added to any of the dismissals.” The Opening Acclamation, quoted at the top of this article, is also used only during this same time frame (BCP, page 355).

Save the Date!

Bishop DeDe will be at St. Mark’s on Tuesday, 10 May to officially welcome Dawn-Victoria as our new Priest-in-Charge. St. Mark’s Renewal of Ministry will be at 6pm. During the service we will offer Dawn-Victoria symbols of her ministry among us and together we will renew our Baptismal Covenants.

A reception is being planned for after the service. Please contact Kathy or see the sign-up sheet to contribute to the reception.

The service will also be livestreamed to St. Mark’s Facebook for those who prefer to participate virtually.

We hope that you will join us for this special service.

First Sunday coffee hours are hosted by our youth confirmation class. Please head down to the undercroft to say hello. Donations collected go to Sacred Heart Ukrainian Church for Ukraine relief.

St. Mark’s is collecting gently worn, used or new shoes, sandals, flip-flops, crocs, slippers, and boots. The donations will help raise funds for the Twin Tiers Honor Flights. Supporting Funds2Orgs Group gives those in developing countries a path out of poverty. See the information sheet near the donation box.

We livestream our 8a Sunday service and are looking for those who are interested in channeling their inner Steven Spielberg. Training will be offered to budding directors. Please let Dawn-Victoria or Kathy know if you are interested in helping to share St. Mark’s with those who watch us on line.
