Greening Our Town - Planting for the Future

Last year the Town was successfully awarded a grant of over $70,000 from the Water Corporation, administered by the Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA), for the planting of trees in areas with low vegetation cover and high urban heat risk. This grant was the highest monetary value grant awarded across all successful local governments. 2021-2022 Local Government Urban Canopy Grant Program

After successful round one planting in 2021 in Locke Park, Gourley Park, along Marmion Street and St Peters Road, this Winter we will be planting in the Preston Point Ward, the Town's hottest area.

This planting will not only improve amenity of the reserves for both the sporting and recreational users, it will increase biodiversity and ultimately reduce heat. Together with our consultants the Town has carefully selected suitable species and locations for the trees to ensure maximum user benefit, whilst preserving residential view corridors.

Request a Verge Tree

Verge trees help to create ecosystems that provide habitat and food for birds and other animals and they provide shade for pedestrians, improve the appearance of our streets and create corridors between natural areas for wildlife. Plus, tree-lined streets can also increase property values, reduce cooling costs and improve the overall health of the community.

The Town supports residents’ efforts in greening their streets and will supply and plant trees on residential verges free of charge at the request of the property owner. To request a verge tree, please complete and submit the
online form before 31 May 2022.
