The most powerful weapon is not nuclear: Jesus and the War in Ukraine

Rev. Roland Syens served as an LCC Missionary Pastor in Ukraine from 1993-2005. He connects daily with our Ukrainian pastors as they struggle, with broken hearts, to care for their families, congregation members, and others during the Russian-imposed war on Ukraine. In his article, he answers the question: Where is God in all of this?

“Not-Just-Communications” LCC/LLL-C Internship 2022

CANADA - Exciting News! LCC and Lutheran Laymen’s League of Canada are teaming up again to offer a paid, part-time internship opportunity for the second summer in a row.

Last year the internship was primarily focused on the area of communications. This year we would like to offer more flexibility to potential applicants. For the summer of 2022, the internship will focus on inspiring young people to consider their gifts and how they might be used in service of God’s people. If you are interested in serving the church in any way at all—whether it be in communications, graphic design, donor retention, office management, or even through music or art—we would love to hear from you!

COMMUNICATIONS

Director of Communications, here! Recently, we established a group on LCC's Servant Leader Network to talk about resources. I would love to see this group become a reference point that LCC folks can have in their back pocket when issues and opportunities come up! Say your muslim friend is starting to ask you questions about who WE say Jesus is... You can hop on over to the "Apologetics: Talking with Muslims" Topic to quickly find resources that your fellow LCC members have found helpful. This group will also give Synod a better idea of the disparities out there in the realm of resources, so that we can take advantage of the opportunity to create new resources! Group members can add any new "Topics" to the group if you would like to see more resources in that area, or simply see what resources are currently available.

For those who aren't familiar with Servant Leader Network... it is basically social media but specifically for Lutheran Church–Canada members to foster communication across all 3 regions. It was developed by Rev. Michael Schutz, and many groups in synod are currently using it for discussions at the circuit level or to create other groups like the Lutheran Music Group, LCC's Communications Community, and the 2022 Synod Convention Discussion Forum.

MISSION MINUTE

Busy first quarter of 2022 for the NYG team!

The LCC National Youth Gathering team has been busy this year, starting off 2022 with three virtual events for leaders and youth, and holding an in-person committee meeting in Winnipeg!

For example, the March Round Table was hosted by the NYG team for youth leaders on responding faithfully and in love to questions around gender and identity. This short time together only scratched the surface of this important topic, but a resources list was provided and there was good, supportive conversation about Law and Gospel and their importance in youth ministry.

Read the full article on CanadianLutheran.ca for details about upcoming events and don't forget to register for the NYG by April 29, 2022.

These weekly sermons, written by various LCC pastors, are primarily intended for congregations without a pastor and for those unable to provide online services during exceptional circumstances. Each written sermon is accompanied by the Collect of the Day, appointed Scripture Readings, suggested hymns, and prayers. The Scripture Readings are from the Three-Year Lectionary Series of the Lutheran Service Book (LSB). The suggested hymns are taken from Lutheran Service Book: Hymn Selection Guide – (OT) are hymns that fit with the Old Testament Reading, (E) the Epistle, and (G) the Gospel.

Prayer for Ukraine:

Heavenly Father, God of all concord, it is Your gracious will that Your children on earth live together in harmony and peace.  Defeat the plans of all those who would stir up violence and strife, war, and bloodshed, and, according to Your will, end the current conflict that now rages in Ukraine. Protect those who are suffering and being displaced from their homes. Bring a restoration of calm and security, and heal the wounds that have been inflicted.

We especially commend to Your care and keeping our Lutheran Church–Canada missionary in Ukraine, Rev. Oleksiy Navrotskyy and his family; Bishop Alexander Yurchenko; and all the pastors and members of the congregations of the Synod of Evangelical Lutheran Churches in Ukraine. Preserve them from all harm and danger. Grant them an extra measure of Your Holy Spirit at this time that they would remain steadfast in the one true faith in Him who is Lord and Saviour of all. In the midst of this conflict, empower them to reach out to others with the precious Gospel of God’s peace and love in Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

LUTHERAN FOUNDATION

Forgetting to change beneficiaries on non-probated assets is very common. Upon life’s milestone events - the passing of a spouse or loved one, separation, divorce, marriage, or re-marriage – individuals are encouraged to update their Will to make sure the beneficiary designations are current and still valid. However, updating just your Will is only half the task, as the Will only covers those assets likely to be listed on a future probate submission. Very often there are other assets that have their own beneficiary clause, not covered by the Will – life insurance, company pensions, RRSP, TFSA, RIF, and others – and these too need to be updated and made current.

Not surprisingly, the courts assume that having considered your new circumstance, the choice was yours to make as to which beneficiary designations you wanted to update. They therefore tend to uphold the “wrong” designations unless there is compelling evidence that would clearly indicate otherwise, however changing your Will is viewed as insufficient evidence. Litigation on this issue varies by province and based on what evidence is presented.  To avoid litigation on your estate, and acrimony between your loved ones, be diligent in properly taking care of such matters.

Isaiah 65:17–25
1 Corinthians 15:19–26
Luke 24:1–12

Christ’s Resurrection Is the Firstfruits of the New Creation

The Lord has promised to “create new heavens and a new earth” (Is. 65:17), in which His people shall abide in peace and joy. That new creation has begun in the bodily resurrection of Christ Jesus. All the baptized belong to that new creation. Reborn of water and the Holy Spirit, they are “the offspring of the blessed of the Lord” (Is. 65:23). The Lord rejoices and is glad in them; He hears and answers their prayers. For “if in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied” (1 Cor. 15:19). But Christ Jesus has been raised, “the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep” (1 Cor. 15:20). We may be “perplexed about this” (Luke 24:4), perhaps even frightened and brought to our knees, because it seems like an “idle tale” (Luke 24:11). But faith clings to the Word of Christ and finds His resurrected body — not in the tomb, but in His Holy Supper.
