Career Development

We have amazing community partners offering UBC students 6 placements this summer, including City Beet, Fresh Roots, Food Stash Foundation, North Shore Neighbourhood House, and Kasama Chocolate!

The career development in Land and Food Systems course (LFS 496) prepares UBC students professionally and academically for future careers through a mentored learning experience with a real food business or organization. Students apply the theory they gain from class through on-the-ground, food system-related work and course assignments that support their practical learning.

 Community Workshops

Workshops: Spring Foraging

There are two workshops coming up that will teach you how to identify wild foods in spring; flowers, mushrooms, edible trees, shoots, and leaves. On April 21, learn more about harvesting Shoots, Leaves and Edible Trees, then come back for more spring foraging tips focused on how to SAFELY identify wild mushrooms on May 5.

In a lifetime of living, harvesting and cooking between the Coast Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Chef Robin Kort has gathered an abundance of delicious local plants, wild mushrooms and fresh seafood into her kitchen. She advises us to take the utmost care to pick only what is abundant and leave the rest for other beasts!

We strongly suggest registering early as our workshops have limited seats.
We hope to see you (virtually) at our workshops soon!

CSFS Associate Dr. Claire Kremen, a professor at UBC's department of zoology and Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability, discussed what can be done to render agriculture less hostile to biodiversity and the climate.
