Happy spring everyone! As I write this, I am avoiding the mounds of leaves in the backyard calling for my attention! Once the long winter months are behind us and that last mound of snow has finally melted away, the day comes to break out the patio furniture, maybe even enjoy a cocktail on the back deck but those leaf bags aren’t going to fill themselves! Oh well, spring has sprung, and I am excited!
I’m thrilled to announce that Story Hunter Podcasts will be releasing its 50th episode this month! It’s hard to believe that in less than two years we have hit such an amazing milestone and I want to thank all our listeners who have tuned in and spread the word about our fascinating true crime stories.
We began with an eight-part series on the infamous Evelyn Dick and I can still say Where are You Mrs. Dick? remains one of my all-time favourite stories. I wonder if we’ll ever find out what happened to Evelyn Dick. Will the government ever release their secret files? Let’s hope so!
I think there is a unique fascination with female killers and our latest episode featured another unlikely feminine beauty who became famous for her crime. Double Indemnity: Murder in the Suburbs tells the story of Lucille Miller a petite housewife and mother living in Alta Loma, an idyllic town an hour’s drive east of Los Angeles.
Originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Lucille seemed to have it all – a handsome husband who was a local dentist, a beautiful custom-built home, three young children and another one on the way. But behind the suburban façade, Lucille wasn’t happy. She wanted more, including the love of another man. When Lucille’s husband dies in a car fire, everyone mourns for the young widow, but the police soon begin to question Mrs. Miller’s account of the tragic accident.
It was a story that gripped the headlines in California in 1964 and captured the attention of one of America’s most revered writers. In a 1966 essay for the Saturday Evening Post, Joan Didion wrote about Lucille Miller and her suburban dreams that ultimately ended in murder. The story lives on in Ms. Didion’s writings.
Our next podcast is also about dreams and aspirations. It’s the story of a young, scrappy Canadian kid who dreamed of becoming a hockey player in the NHL and he made it. But his rise to Hockey Night in Canada fame wouldn’t be without deadly consequences for him and his family. I hope you get a chance to listen!
