Join HDFFA for our Second Annual Farmer/Rancher Networking Night!

Local season is here and we want to celebrate by inviting Central Oregon farmers and ranchers to join us for an evening of local food and conversation with fellow producers. Each attendee will receive a free drink and a sampling of local foods prepared by Terra Kitchen.

This event is for practicing local farmers and ranchers in Central Oregon to provide a space to network and build relationships with each other. The event is free for current HDFFA partners and $10 for non-HDFFA partners.

Many thanks to our generous sponsor of this event, SCP Redmond!

Central Oregon Service Providers Recommendation List

HDFFA is developing a list of recommended service providers for local farmers and ranchers in Central Oregon. A service provider is anyone who provides an operational service or good such as a bookkeeper, repairperson, hay supplier, or grant writer. We are developing this list based on direct recommendations from farmers and ranchers. Please use the following form to recommend service providers that you have enjoyed working with in the past.

HDFFA HAPPENINGS

HDFFA seeks new Agricultural Support Manager

We are seeking a dynamic person to deliver our Beginning Farmer and Rancher programming throughout the tri-county area in collaboration with OSU Extension Service.  This includes education and networking events, marketing and wholesale support, agritourism support, and oversight of policy and advocacy collaborative efforts.  The Manager will develop, implement, deliver and maintain programming in collaboration with key partners.  For more information, click here!

Grow and Give

In 2022, we are asking farmers to grow produce that has been requested by pantry clients based on feedback collected in 2021. This list can be found on the Grow & Give website.

If you want to participate, email abigail@hdffa.org and let her know what you intend to grow or have available. You grow the food and donate it based upon weight at participating farmers markets, have HDFFA pick it up directly from the farm, or have produce gleaned using the HDFFA Harvest Team. In November, HDFFA provides your farm a list of your donation(s) per category, per pound. HDFFA will reimburse for donations on a pre established, discounted, wholesale rate (up to a maximum amount per farm, up to $5,000) in November / December. Those who opt out of reimbursement will receive a tax letter crediting donations.

Fresh Harvest Kits and Produce Wholesale

This year HDFFA is looking for farms who are interested in becoming a contact with our partner food pantries for potential produce buying for Fresh Harvest Kits. Every month, participating food pantries purchase fresh produce that pairs with a recipe to go in a prepared meal kit that is then given out as a first come, first serve item. HDFFA has been granted $5,000 from Whole Foods to service this need and funds used for purchasing wholesale produce from local farms will be paid for directly by HDFFA.

If you are interested in potentially selling fresh produce at your wholesale price to participating Fresh Harvest Kit food pantries, please email abigail@hdffa.org and we can work to further develop a relationship with a pantry based on need.

Fresh eggplant, chard, peppers and basil are gathered to be placed in a Fresh Harvest Kit, complete with a recipe, cooking instructions, a spice kit, and pantry staples at The Giving Plate in Bend OR.

Upcoming Regenerative Agriculture & Pasture Management Workshop for Veterans

Central Oregon Veterans Ranch is hosting Scott Duggan, OSU Extension Livestock Agent, to teach veteran ranchers about building soil and increasing forage production. The event will be held at their location off 61st Street on April 21st from 10-12. This event is for veterans only and is free to attend.

Please register by emailing Logan at COVR.

TIPS & TRICKS

Food Waste to Feed Opportunities

Are you a rancher looking to cut down on your feed costs? Have you ever considered using food byproducts as a supplement to your animal's diet? HDFFA currently has two opportunities for free food byproducts:

  • Three Creeks Brewing: Spent grain available, wet mix of 2-row base malt and specialty malts. Rancher would need to pick up weekly at the manufacturing facility in Sisters and quantity would vary based on season.
  • Laird Superfoods: Food byproduct, mainly coconut and other flavors including turmeric, cinnamon, and sugar. 220 gallons available weekly. Rancher would need to pick up but warehouse would use forklift to lift plastic pallet sized bins on the truck.

State Disaster Relief Opportunities

There are two new programs available for agricultural producers who suffered losses last year due to drought, fire, flood, and other natural disasters.
  1. Oregon Drought and Disaster Assistance Program: This is a forgivable loan managed by ODA and distributed by private lenders. It requires past Schedule F paperwork and covers 90% of losses up to $125,000. We suggest producers go through this program if they meet qualifications as there is more money available. (The deadline for this continues to be pushed back. We will send an update once open.)
  2. Farmer and Rancher Disaster Relief Grant Program: Managed by the Oregon Community Food System Network, this grant is meant for producers who do not meet the requirements for the ODA program. There is a maximum grant amount of $30,000. (Now open for applications but keep in mind that if you apply for this grant you are NOT eligible for ODAP.)
Oregon State has put together this helpful guide to help you navigate which program is the best fit for you.

If you'd like some more help deciding or applying, please reach out to Annie.
