Friends —

Tomorrow (Friday) begins our third and FINAL WEEK for CODA at the State Theatre! A rousing round of applause for this brilliant film that has taken Traverse City by storm! We have to let it go so this is absolutely your last chance to see CODA in a movie theater with an audience! Ever! From now on it will only be on the streamer APPLE+. Every showing we have people tell us how deeply they were affected by this film. It will be here for one more week, so take some time if you haven't already to see what all the fuss is about!

At the State Theatre: CODA
Friday and Saturday at 1pm, 4pm and 7pm
Sunday at 1pm and 4pm
Monday thru Thursday at 3pm and 7pm

This absolutely unforgettable film has captured the minds and hearts of our State Theater family and patrons. Winning for BEST PICTURE and earning a BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR award for Troy Kotsur, and the Oscar for BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY. In CODA (Child of Deaf Adults), Ruby is the only hearing child of deaf parents, played by Troy Kotsur and Marlee Matlin. When she finds a passion for singing and music, she looks beyond a life working on her family's small town fishing boat. Not only a film about ability and art, but about the struggles of the working class so rarely portrayed on film. A must-see!

At The Bijou: Summer of Soul
Friday and Saturday at 2pm and 6pm
Sunday at 2pm

Winning BEST DOCUMENTARY at the Oscars, BEST MUSIC FILM at the Grammy's, and sweeping through Sundance, Summer of Soul is a can't-miss musical experience. Where can you find Nina Simone, Gladys Knight, and Stevie Wonder? In the same summer as Woodstock  was in 1969, it was the Harlem Cultural Festival. Despite massive crowds and unforgettable stars, the footage of this once-in-a-lifetime event was never seen and it has been largely forgotten. Until, that is, Filmmaker and musician Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson brought together famous faces from today and yesterday to remember and relive the festival that was nearly lost to time.

P.S. Over the next few days, I will write you all a letter regarding the situation of holding this summer’s Traverse City Film Festival. We’ve been working round the clock hoping to make it happen. I have a couple of questions I want to ask you and your feedback will be an enormous help to us. We can’t do the festival without you. So look for my letter in the next few days, and please, no jokes about “resurrecting” the film fest.
