newDemocracy Foundation: April 2022

Hi everyone,

Generally, our newsletters update you on the results of our practical projects, of our work with bodies like the OECD or UN Democracy Fund – or even offer a different perspective on the ‘normal’ rough and tumble of politics. We’re mindful and appreciative that a large part of our audience work in parliaments and are looking for the key takeaways on how these innovations can help leaders lead.

This email is a little different.

As a research foundation pursuing a new idea, we also know that new ideas in politics and democracy need to be understood – and welcomed – by our whole community. That’s where Osher Günsberg comes in. This is why we’ve made this video.

Ten years ago, many elected representatives were saying our democracy is fine and there is no problem to solve. We don’t hear that today. Five years ago, we would hear that the idea of citizens’ assemblies and citizens’ juries was curious… but a bit too weird. We don’t hear that today. What we hear is that trying this has real appeal, the logic and method are robust… but they aren’t sure how the community will feel about it. Hence, Osher.

The 2-minute video here is a fun way to introduce the idea to a new audience. It’s already been picked up by an array of media outlets including www.news.com.au as the #1 news site – just one of around 60 to pick it up so far.

As people who take the time and have the interest to follow what we do, we also wanted to make sure it landed in your inbox directly. Just by watching it, you demonstrate you have an interest in democratic innovation. If you choose to sign the petition at www.changepolitics.org.au, you show our elected representatives that there are more and more people who would welcome a trial. If you get a laugh and like the message and you can share the video with your friends then you are making the contribution we need most: spreading the word.

We hope you enjoy it!
