Maundy Thursday receives its name from the Latin word “mandatum,” which means “mandate,” or “commandment,” recalling Jesus’ words: “A new commandment I give you: to love one another just as I have loved you.” It is his example of—and our call to—love and service that we remember on Maundy Thursday.
Tenebrae is a Latin word meaning “shadows.” The Tenebrae service is an ancient Christian office, a way of retelling the story of Christ’s suffering. The readings trace the story of Christ’s passion, and the ever-approaching darkness symbolizes the gathering darkness that surrounds Jesus' death. Eventually, even the Christ Candle is removed from view. Departing in darkness, we remember the light of Christ that will return on Easter.
Following the service, it will be available to watch at any time via our YouTube channel HERE.
