COVID-19 isn't taking a break

From all of us here at Cornwall Council we'd like to wish you a very happy Easter, however you choose to celebrate.

Cases of COVID-19 are still very high across Cornwall, and we're urging residents and visitors alike to remember that Covid isn't taking a break this Easter.

How COVID-19 will develop over time remains uncertain, so we all still have a part to play in helping keep ourselves and each other safe and protected.
Please keep up with the basics to help keep each other safe:
✋ Hands
😷 Face
↔ Space
💨Fresh air
💉 Get vaccinated - you can still get a dose if you've missed one

The government has published important advice for people with symptoms of respiratory infections, such as COVID-19; people with a positive COVID-19 test result and their contacts; and advice on safer behaviours for everyone.

Is your teen eligible for their vaccine?

Your teenager might have had COVID-19 when it was time for them to have their 1st or 2nd dose of their vaccines. Young people need to wait for 12 weeks from when they had COVID-19 before they can get a dose.

Help them to book their appointment if 12 weeks has passed since they had COVID-19.

Make big savings by bus

🚌 We're making it cheaper for you to travel by bus thanks to a new pilot scheme led by Cornwall Council.

The reduced bus fares pilot scheme is a first for a local authority and follows a successful bid by the Council for £23.5m funded by UK Government.

It means that adult bus passengers will, on average, pay one-third less for their fares.

Support for residents taking part in the Homes for Ukraine scheme

🇺🇦 Cornwall Council is continuing to support residents taking part in the Government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme and build a local response to the humanitarian crisis.🇺🇦

We’re working closely with our voluntary sector partners to make sure that all the necessary steps and processes are in place to support anyone escaping from the war.

Once refugees arrive in Cornwall, it’s really important that sponsors inform us by emailing homesforukraine@cornwall.gov.uk so payments can be made direct to individuals.

Cornwall Council only has access to data from government once the match process has been completed and visas granted. Any other questions or queries sponsors have prior to that must be made to the Home Office.

Plan to help Cornwall prosper for decades agreed

This week our full Council meeting signed off plans to help Cornwall be prosperous for the next three decades. In the meeting they also discussed the possibility of Cornwall having a mayor under the County Deal, and agreed actions relating to the Council’s Pensions Committee and future licensing application fees.

The 30 year plan brings forward a new way of working that supports the Council’s priorities and will help shape how Cornwall should evolve to 2050 and beyond.

It brings together three vital areas: housing, transport, and planning, and is designed to ensure that plans and strategies across the Council have the same direction of travel and complement each other.

The plan will play an important part in how the Council will achieve its mission of ‘working with communities for a carbon neutral Cornwall, where everyone can start well, live well and age well,’ and to meet its four priority outcomes:

  • A brilliant place to be a child and grow up
  • A thriving, sustainable Cornwall that offers a secure home, a decent income and a great environment for all
  • Vibrant, safe and supportive communities where people help each other live well
  • An empowering and enterprising Council that delivers great value for money

Help us help you this Easter

With spring in the air putting a spring in our step, the Easter holidays are welcomed by many as a chance to explore our county. And whilst care-free fun is top of the wish list, it’s good sense to be prepared for any health hiccups.

Away from the joys of hot cross buns and Easter egg hunts, our NHS is dealing with a huge demand on its services from hospitals to GP surgeries.

We all have our part to play in the smooth running of our healthcare services, so when you’re in need of help with a health matter, take a moment to think which is the right service to choose. Because by choosing wisely, the whole system can flow better.

£150 Council Tax rebate

As part of the government’s initiative to help households with rising energy costs, they have announced a £150 Utility Energy Rebate for most households in council tax bands A-D.

We anticipate that the rebates will start to be issued in late April. You can help us by making sure that you are set up for direct debit payments for council tax, so we can pay you quickly and easily.

Please be aware second homes and empty properties will not be eligible for the payment.

Have your say on how our heritage evolves

The Easter holidays will see many residents and visitors alike make a visit to one of the many historic locations in Cornwall.

Cornwall’s historic landscape, buildings and environment are at the heart of a new strategy designed to help plan for Cornwall’s future, meet the challenges of the climate change emergency, and reverse the decline in our wildlife.

We'd like you to have your say about how we can best shape and protect Cornwall’s heritage, while increasing Cornwall’s prosperity and distinctiveness for the future.

The public consultation on the Draft Cornwall Heritage Strategy runs until Friday 22 April.
