SNB - JDI Negotiations Update

In our March 18th, 2022 update, it was reported that SNB had requested the NB Forest Products Commission to initiate arbitration proceedings between the SNB Board and JDI.

The Commission granted the arbitration request made by SNB on March 17th, 2022 and gave the two parties seven days to appoint a representative to the arbitration panel.

SNB named Mr. David Palmer as its representative and at the time of this report, was never informed by the Commission who or if JDI named a representative.

Since the arbitration process has been granted, a considerable amount of uncertainty has developed with exactly what can be arbitrated.

Typically, items in a wood purchase agreement include:

  • Price
  • Product Specifications
  • Volume
  • Dates of Delivery
  • Point of Purchase
  • Terms and Conditions

On Thursday, April 14, 2022, the Commission notified SNB and JDI that they were seeking clarification of exactly what the two parties were seeking to arbitrate.

The SNB Negotiating Team looks forward to clarifying these outstanding items so that arbitration process can continue, so that owners and producers can be confident they are receiving a fair price for their forest products.

Woodlot Owner Of The Year

Each year, fellow SNB woodlot owners nominate private woodlot owners in recognition of their outstanding efforts in managing their woodland. The award increases public awareness of the importance of forest management and encourages woodlot management among other woodlot owners.

Anyone can nominate a woodlot owner for the award. Once nominations are submitted, a review committee selects SNBFPMB’s Woodlot Owner of the Year and the award presentation takes place at the Annual Meeting, followed by a tour of the recipient’s woodlot later in the season.

The deadline for all applications is next Friday, April 22nd, 2022.

Northern Hardwoods Research Institute has recently released a new initiative on improving forest technology known as the "Digital Timberlands 20/20" project. This project is partnered with many organizations in industry, education and government parties to enhance forest lidar technology beyond current technology.

New Brunswick Grant Maps

Many landowners have had an interest in knowing how current property lines reflect the land grants. GeoNB has developed a mapping software that compares these two features in New Brunswick.

To see the GeoNB provincial grant maps, click here.

Zoom out to find the desired location. Once fully zoomed in to the area, the current (to date) property lines will appear in red, contrasting to the grant lines in black. These parcels also give information such as owner, size, and grant identification number.

Newly Proposed N.B. Mining Regulations

Media on the proposed mining regulation changes have yet to be released. We will continue to monitor for any updates to ensure that woodlot owners are aware of any progress.
