May 2022 Honors Celebration and
Installation of Officers
We hope that this will be our last Zoom meeting for the Honors celebration. We are very happy to invite you to join us as we install new officers and honor some very hard-working members of our Portland Branch.
Thursday, May 19th, 11:00 – 12 noon
from the comfort of your home on Zoom
Guest speaker: Carolyn Wood, author of:
Tough Girl: An Olympian’s Journey
and
Class Notes: A Young Teacher’s Lessons from Classroom to Kennedy Compound
Carolyn Wood
Carolyn Wood gained fame as a 1960 Olympic gold medalist in swimming. Her book Tough Girl tells her remarkable story when at age fourteen she became one of a handful of child athletes to win gold. A lifelong Oregonian, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Oregon (BA English 1967) and Portland State University (MSW 1979, MS Education 1980), and taught high school English, literature, and composition for over thirty-five years. Her latest book, Class Notes, which came out in 2021 tells of her extraordinary experience as the Robert Kennedy children’s governess after his assassination in 1968.

Presidents' Message
Katie Raetz - Co-President
Susan Marthens - Co-President
During the AAUW Online Conference and Annual Meeting held April 7-9, 2022, we were informed, entertained, and celebrated. It started with a Wine Testing & Learning experience on 1 April 2022—probably very interesting but could not attend (it is on You Tube). On the 7th, we had an insightful presentation by Chisao Hata, Oregon Humanities Conversation Project Leader, entitled “Can We Get Along: Examining our Personal Experiences of Connection and Community.” Friday, the 8th, an inspiring take on “Ageing Gracefully” by Dr. Neesha Patel, OHSU in which she laid the foundation of gracefully living a good life by touting the Mediterranean diet, movement/exercise, thoughtful eating practices, having a purpose in life, learning new skills, personal connections, etc, etc. Probably on You Tube also.
Saturday, the new CEO of AAUW, Gloria Blackwell, outlined—with a Power Point presentation—what AAUW has achieved and where we are going.
The program followed the agenda outlined in a recent Email about the Annual Conference, with delegates raising their virtual hands (just one hand per delegate) to vote on various Bylaws Amendments; presentation of financial report; introduction of officer candidates; invitation to 2023 Annual Meeting, etc. All these details will be available on You Tube so am not repeating them here. Portland Branch was in the top 10 branches for overall contributions and per capita contributions. Congrats to all of you!
One impression gained from this is to appreciate the skills, talents, and dedication of the many officers and members at the state and branch levels who make AAUW OREGON function and achieve such a myriad of goals and programs.
