Seeds of Opportunity: Plant sales help to grow student success

Always a popular community event, the annual Battle Ground Public Schools plant and greenhouse sales are also a great learning experience for the district's agriculture and horticulture students. Months before the sales, they start working to help plant and tend to thousands of plants, readying them for your yard or garden.

"I think it's amazing that we have a greenhouse and that people come and buy plants that kids plant," said Jamie Campbell, a senior at Battle Ground High School taking advanced horticulture. "It's just really sweet that everyone comes together for this."

Proceeds from the sales support the district's agriculture and horticulture CTE programs.

To learn more about the work the students do to prepare for the plant sales, be sure to watch our video on the district's YouTube channel. More information about this years' sales is on the district website.

Holocaust survivor speaks with Battle Ground High School students

Students and faculty at Battle Ground High School welcomed Holocaust survivor Peter Metzelaar for a talk this week about his experiences as a young boy hiding from Nazis during World War II. Metzelaar, who was born in Amsterdam in 1935, went into hiding with his mother after his father and other relatives were arrested. He and his mother spent two years on a small farm, often hiding under floorboards or in a small handmade cave in the nearby forest as Nazi officers searched the house. Eventually, they fled to The Hauge where they lived until the Canadians liberated Holland. Metzelaar, his mother and an aunt were the only members of his family to survive. Metzelaar now lives in Seattle with his wife, Bea, and works with the Holocaust Center for Humanity to educate the public about that time in history. You can read more about his story on their website.

BGPS’ Board of Directors conducted a regular board meeting on April 11. Highlights are in this week's BG Board, Briefly. Archived video of board meetings is available on the district website. The next regular board meeting will be held on April 25 at 6:00 p.m.

Tukes Valley Middle School students meet "George Washington"

History came alive for Tukes Valley Middle School fifth graders visiting The Heathman Lodge in Vancouver on April 9. They had an opportunity to attend the annual Washington State Sons of the American Revolution conference. Students were assigned the task of writing a letter to George Washington and then had a chance to ask questions of Washington himself, in the form of Vern Frykholm, a retired real estate evaluator who now tours the state educating people about the country's first president. Fifth grade teacher Linda Korum helped to coordinate the event and told The Reflector newspaper that it was "a great opportunity for the kids to be able to ask questions and spark curiosity, which I think is really important with fifth graders."

Students also had the chance to meet with other reenactors, including one posing as America's third president, Thomas Jefferson. SAR comprises members who trace their ancestry back to participants in the American Revolution. Many are also veterans themselves. You can learn more about their work online

First Inspire Week a hit at Laurin Middle School

Four years after helping to start Inspire Week at Prairie High School, Mandy Waugh brought it to Laurin Middle School. The former security guard, who now works as a receptionist in the district office, brought up the idea of Inspire Week to Laurin Principal Travis Drake while helping out temporarily at the school earlier this year. Drake and ASB coordinator Jessica Berry jumped at the opportunity and used the week to inspire acts of thankfulness, kindness and acceptance. The week wrapped up with the entire school turning out to line the running track and cheer on Carson Sipe, a Laurin 6th grader battling bone cancer.

"It's awesome to see all of those students and staff members working together to create a week full of fun activities and opportunities to build that connection and those relationships," Waugh said. "And it's even better when the students and staff feel inspired to spread their love and appreciation to others, not just during Inspire Week but throughout the whole year."

You can see more pictures from Laurin's Inspire Week celebration on the district's Facebook page.
