Let us pray:

God, Lord of all creation, lover of life and of everything, please help us to love in our very small way what You love infinitely and everywhere. We thank You that we can offer just this one prayer and that will be more than enough, because in reality everything and everyone is connected, and nothing stands alone. To pray for one part is really to pray for the whole, and so we do. Help us each day to stand for love, for healing, for the good, for the diverse unity of the Body of Christ and all creation, because we know this is what You desire: as Jesus prayed, that all may be one. We offer our prayer together with all the holy names of God, we offer our prayer together with Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Easter Letter from Priest Doyle
The photo above is provided by Sandy Keith who noticed the dogwood tree at St Patrick's booms at every Easter no matter what day of the year it falls on!
What lovely reminder of the Lord's beauty and grace.

Dear Saint Patrick’s Family,

Happy Easter!  We see light shining through the pandemic and our other concerns.  Jesus has risen!  We are worshipping in church together, celebrating our life in Christ.  Some are still meeting by zoom and we support their need for safety.  We celebrate our new organist and other new members who have come to join our community.

On Saturday, April 23, we will be meeting together to learn about a process to help us move forward with the work we need to do to ensure that our vibrant community and mission continue long into the future.  Please mark your calendars for our family gathering at Saint Patrick’s.  A morning snack and lunch will be provided.  Please RSVP to Bobbiejo: parishadm9000@gmail.com.

Be thinking about how you will serve the Lord as a member of St Patrick’s.  We will be thinking about what ministries we are providing, what ministries we don’t currently have participants for, and what ministries we may want to add to the mix.  Consider your gifts, your passions, and God’s call to you at this time for the sake of the world.

I invite you to share in our visit with Moe Jabari after worship on Sunday, May 1, in Stephenson Hall.  Moe will be talking about his own journey as an immigrant coming into the Unites States, as well as describing what United in Kindness is all about.  This may be a wonderful way to consider a fresh approach to how we relate to others we meet in our surrounding community.

Please continue your almsgiving regularly for our parish to thrive.  Placing a financial offering in the plate on Sundays helps support our daily operations, imperative for a healthy, functioning congregation.  Many people today are in special need due to the pandemic, inflation and other things happening in our own country and around the world that affect us all.  Your gifts make such a difference in the lives of people.  Please give what you can today: St Patrick’s, PO Box 247, Kenwood CA 95452.  You can also offer your gifts via the On-line Button on our website and in our weekly eNews.

You are a new creation in Christ!  We are forgiven and changed forever in the Death and Resurrection of Jesus.  Your support of our ministries helps to bear the burden of our family in God and brings light and hope to those in our community.  Generously pour out from yourself in love.  Be like the woman with the costly perfumed ointment who anoints Jesus at the table in preparation for his burial to come.

Joyfully Yours in Christ,

Priest Doyle

What is Maundy Thursday?
Presented
by
Minerva Haddad

Good Friday, we know. And Easter most certainly. But what is Maundy Thursday? Maundy Thursday is a day before Easter, believed to be the when Jesus celebrated his final Passover with His disciples. Most notably, that Passover meal was when Jesus washed the feet of His disciples in an extraordinary display of humility. He then commanded them to do the same for each other.
What Does Maundy Thursday Mean?
Christ's "mandate" is commemorated on Maundy Thursday---"maundy" being a shortened form of mandatum (Latin), which means "command."  It was on this day of Christ's final week before being crucified and resurrected that He said this commandment to His disciples. Jesus and his disciples had just shared what was known as the Last Supper and he was washing their feet when he stated:
"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another" (John 13:34).
What Was the New Commandment Given on Maundy Thursday?
Well, for one thing, it raised the definition of love to a new and higher standard. Jesus sacrificially met His followers' deepest need---that of new spiritual life and the forgiveness of sins. He even loved His enemies, and He calls us to show love to those who don't appear to deserve it. Just as Jesus loved sinners "to the end" (or "to the max" John 13:1) when He had nothing to gain from them, so must we. The Bible says that there was nothing attractive about sinful mankind that drew Him to love us. God loved us while we were yet sinners (Romans 5:8). Salvation is not only a wonderful gift that protects us from the penalty that we deserve Romans 6:23 , the work of Christ also imbues new life, grants spiritual strength, and motivates godly action in those who believe:
"For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works." (Titus 2:11-14)
While Scripture doesn't forbid us to commemorate days like Maundy Thursday, the main question is are we observing Christ's new command to love---especially those who deserve it least?
"Beloved, let us love one another. For love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love." (1 John 4:7-8)
Many churches observe Maundy Thursday with a Communion service and a foot-washing ceremony. These traditions help Christians reflect on the sacrifice of Jesus and his commandment for us to love and serve others.

It has been three years since the parishioners have been able to gather together to process into the church on Palm Sunday, gloriously waving the palms remembering the triumph of Jesus.  Sunday, April 10, was the day we once again joyfully held palms and made our way from the courtyard, and into the church  through the Narthex and then to our pews.

The Choir was inspired.  We heard and felt the efforts of our new organist, Doug Richardson.  It was indeed "A Joyful Noise”!

After worship, all were received in the hall for Fellowship provided by Merle Holtzen and Stephanie Chapralis-McCaffrey, with an assist from Eleanor Albon, Fellowship Ministry Coordinator.  In honor of the day, small crosses were provided to take home.

                                   Crosses to take home!

Stewardship, Education & Development
With The Rev. David Gordon
Dear St. Patrick’s Family,

We are writing to provide information on important next steps that we are taking to address our church finances and long-term growth. There will be a meeting with the Rev. David Gordon on Saturday, April 23, 2022 from 10:00 to 4:00, to which all members of the congregation are invited to attend should they wish. While this meeting is open to all, we are reaching out to those members who potentially may become the new stewardship committee in addition to the Vestry and clergy.

The Rev. David Gordon met with Priest Doyle, Sandy Keith, Marilyn Ganz, Karl Mutch, Wendy Wood and Laurie Boone Hogen on March 30, 2022 during which time he gave us an abbreviated presentation of his Stewardship, Education and Development program which might be helpful to St. Patrick’s  at this point in our history.  He recognizes our current situation and concerns, and is prepared to mentor and direct us, without charge, through our first year of the program in which St. Patrick’s Church moves from using funds from endowment and bequests to funds supported by the congregation for its yearly budget. This plan engages all members of the leadership and congregation and encompasses financial stewardship and the commitment to open communication in establishing a long-range plan and shared ownership for all at St. Patrick’s.

In order for the Vestry to make an informed decision as to whether to proceed, Fr. Gordon will conduct an introductory presentation explaining all details to members of the Vestry, Clergy, and a small group of parishioners who will potentially become the stewardship ministry. Of course, anyone else who is interested is welcome to attend on Saturday, April 23 from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. at St Patrick's Church. The room it will be held in is to be determined.
It is extremely important that participants plan to attend the entire meeting and let the church office know so that we may make the appropriate arrangements. Coffee and refreshments will be available at 9:30 with lunch at noon.

Fr. Gordon is a very experienced “guru” of stewardship, as you can read in his attached bio, and has helped hundreds of parishes and scores of dioceses with their stewardship efforts including the Diocese of New York and that of Northern California. He has been a priest for 70 years.  He lives with his wife, Ann, in Novato.  Ann was the executive director of the National Association of Episcopal Schools for 14 years where Laurie Boone Hogen was a long-time board member. Laurie has known Fr. Gordon for more than 35 years and benefitted from his brilliant work in two parishes in California and Connecticut.

As Laurie says, “David has a wonderful demeanor, a delightful sense of humor and is a joy to work with!”

Yours in Christ,

 About Fr. David Gordon

Fr. Gordon is a fourth generation Oregonian and a life-long Episcopalian. He graduated from Oregon State University in 1948 and entered CDSP that fall, finishing his work in 1951. He was assigned to be the first vicar of a new mission in Lebanon, Oregon where, in the six years he was there, the congregation tripled in size and became a parish in 1953. In addition, he retired the debt incurred through the construction of a parish hall and vicarage, then raised the funds for the construction of a church, which was completed in 1957. Meanwhile, at the end of Fr. Gordon’s first year, he founded a new congregation in the neighboring community of Sweet Home, Oregon. When the contractors finished the new church building in Lebanon in the fall of 1957, they moved their operation to Sweet Home and completed a parish hall in time for the Christmas service.  All of which began his interest in “Stewardship”.

After serving as rector of St. James’, Coquille, Oregon, Fr. Gordon was appointed Provincial Secretary for College Work in the Eighth Province. He was to assist in the development and coordination of campus ministry throughout sixteen dioceses located in seven western states, Hawaii, Alaska and the Philippines. There were 45 full-time chaplains and 150 parish clergy. After three plus years, the Gordon family moved to the Bay Area and a college work office was established at CDSP.

Returning to parish ministry, he was called to the rectorship at Holy Trinity, Richmond where he remained for ten years and then to Epiphany in San Carlos where he served for eight years. In both parishes “Stewardship” was an important issue.

In 1982, the Stewardship Commission of the diocese of New York had identified a serious problem among the majority of the parishes. They were using endowment funds in their operating expenses, and this meant they were headed for trouble in the future. The diocese had long had a history of using a maximum of 50% of annual endowment income for annual budgets with the understanding that, at least, one-half of the 50% was to be used for outreach. Parishes were exceeding the limits for local support at a dangerous rate. The diocesan convention accepted a recommendation from the Stewardship Commission that a full-time Director of Stewardship be added to diocesan staff to deal with the problem.  Then the Commission heard of the work that Fr. Gordon was doing in the Diocese of California in his own parishes and also as chair of the diocesan stewardship commission, and they called him.  During the ten and one-half years, individual giving within two hundred parishes of the diocese was increased substantially and the crises was eased. Fr. Gordon retired at the end of 1992 – but not really!

Through the years, there have been requests from dioceses and parishes outside of New York, such as the Diocese of Northern California for help with their stewardship. To date, the program has been introduced and implemented in 43 dioceses in the U.S., 4 in the Anglican Church in Canada, and in the Anglican Diocese of Nassau and the Bahamas, with a total involvement of around 350 parishes.

White Socks!   White Socks!

We heard that there was a need for new white socks for people who go to the FISH Food Pantry to pick up food. Socks for men and women can be donated from our parishioners as they enter the narthex of our church.  A barrel will be right inside the front door, in the left corner.  Donations will be delivered monthly by any one of our St. Patrick's members, who volunteer at FISH in Santa Rosa.

In the past, St. Patrick's donated socks for people in need, and then came Covid!  We are now back in business, and you have an opportunity to donate this coming Sunday, April 3rd.

It's a great day, when we can help someone put their best foot forward, in a new pair of socks!!

Compline Service News

Compline will return on April 28 at 4:00 p.m.
This evening is the Maundy Thursday Liturgy at 5:00 p.m.

What is Compline?
If you've wondered what Compline is, below is a great description of the service.

The last of the four services in the Daily Office (BCP, p. 127). It is descended from the night prayers said before bed at the end of the monastic round of daily prayer. Compline is a simple office including a confession of sins, one or more psalms, a short reading from scripture, versicles and responses, the Lord's Prayer, collects which ask for God's protection during the night to come, and the canticle Nunc dimittis. A hymn for the evening may follow the short reading from scripture. The collects may be followed by a time of silence, along with free intercessions and thanksgivings.

This service is held on Zoom each Thursday at 4 p.m. We urge you to join us for this short service of prayer and meditation before you get involved in preparing dinner and relaxing for the rest of the evening. Try it, you just may like it!

Almighty and everliving God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of his great humility: mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of suffering, and also share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.  Amen.
