Literacy Chicago is proud to partner with UNITE HERE! Local 1, Chicago's hospitatlity union, to provide unique educational opportunities for their members. The union represents over 15,000 hospitality workers in the Chicago area and in northwest Indiana. This partnership is an extension of our relationship with Unite Here Chicago Hospitality Institute (UHCHI), with whom we have been working since August 2021, to provide reading, ESL and applied math classes for their hospitality students.

We now have 60 union members taking classes in ESL, citizenship, GED preparation and digital literacy through our collaboration with UNITE HERE! Local 1. We are also providing one-on-one tutors for the union’s members whose objectives can not be met in a regular class. 

Chris Cullen, one of our UNITE HERE! Local 1 students, has said that he is appreciative to Literacy Chicago for setting up tutoring for him. "My tutor, Bob Cohen, has been really great! He is patient and helpful. During the math session, he explains how to break down the material...using bills and giving worksheets.”

We look forward to continuing and growing our partnerships with both UHCHI and UNITE HERE! Local 1 and helping their members achieve their educational goals!
