Friends -

We connected with you earlier this week with our April Newsletter - but we have some important updates about our upcoming Gun Buyback Event to share with you - and hope you’ll help us share online via Facebook and Twitter or forward this email to your friends and neighbors.

Gun Buyback Event hosted by Santa Clara County District Attorney, Santa Clara County Supervisor Otto Lee, and the Milpitas Police Department on May 22 from 9 am – 1 pm at the Milpitas Community Center.

Gun violence is a complex issue that sadly does not have an easy solution. While we work to address the roots of hate, anger, instability, and sadness that drive so much of this violence - we also want to take actions to get guns out of the community.

Gun buyback events go back to the 1960’s in Philadelphia, but it was not until the 1990’s that these events became a more common effort to help reduce gun violence. We want to help take action to stop preventable self-harm and violence.

The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office last held a gun buyback event in Gilroy in 2019 after the tragic incident at the Garlic Festival, and held one for North County in late 2018. Buybacks have collected thousands of unwanted guns and keep weapons off the streets. It is time for our community to continue to hold these events annually.

After buyback events, firearms acquired by the Santa Clara County’s District Attorney’s Office will be checked to make sure they were not stolen, and the firearms will be stored until they are sent out for destruction. Firearms that are voluntarily surrendered will not be sold.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department has a Gun Relinquishment Program where individuals may turn in any unwanted firearms. Contact the Sheriff’s Office at 408-299-2311 or visit CountySheriff.sccgov.org.

BUYBACK DETAILS:
Weapons must be functional to receive full buyback. Transport UNLOADED weapons in the trunk of your vehicle. Buybacks are first-come, first-serve. Funds are limited and subject to availability. We reserve the right to limit the amount of cash an individual can receive regardless of the amount of firearms surrendered. $100 per handgun/rifle/shotgun, and $200 per assault weapon.

This event is an opportunity to anonymously turn in any unwanted guns or firearms. As we saw in the Sacramento shooting, stolen guns are being used to wreak havoc on our communities. We want to help prevent gun violence and we hope this event will be helpful in achieving that goal. Click HERE to learn more.

We're also working to get "ghost guns" off our streets. Ghost guns are untraceable firearms that are sold on the black market, ordered online, or assembled at home. In a joint referral with Supervisor Chavez, we're working with the District Attorney to stop this growing problem in our community. Click HERE for recent coverage of our referral.

Thank you for your help. We wish joy to the families observing various holidays this weekend. Contact us anytime.

Warm regards,

Supervisor Otto Lee
