BIGGEST Songs of the Week 📈

Every few years, an infectious disco track becomes so popular that it begs the question: Is disco marking a comeback? There was Kylie Minogue’s Love At First Sight in 2001, Madonna’s Hung Up in 2006, and Daft Punk’s Get Lucky in 2013. All three tracks lit a disco spark, but none of them succeeded at reigniting the flame — until late 2019 when Dua Lipa dropped her monster hit Don’t Start Now.

Don’t Start Now opened the floodgates for disco music. In the 12 months that followed the single’s release, Sam Smith covered Donna Summer’s I Feel Love, Harry Styles released the boogie-tinged Adore You, Doja Cat went No. 1 with Say So, Justin Timberlake and SZA danced inside a disco ball on The Other Side, Adam Lambert teamed up with Chic legend Nile Rodgers on Roses, BTS dropped their Grammy-nominated Dynamite, Anthony Fantano declared Jessie Ware’s What’s Your Pleasure? the best album of the year, and NME gave Róisín Murphy’s Róisín Machine a perfect score. By March 2020, there was so much disco on the radio, Billboard reported, “it’s Studio 54 all over again.”

Two years later, disco revival is still in full swing. With a glittering beat and a rubbery bass line, Lizzo’s new single About Damn Time recalls an era of metallic jumpsuits and gogo boots. This isn’t the singer’s first time flirting with the genre (see Juice and her cover of Bee Gees’ Stayin’ Alive). Lizzo premiered About Damn Time this weekend on Saturday Night Live while she worked double duty as both the host and music guest. Her performance included a flute solo reminiscent of Van McCoy’s 1975 disco classic The Hustle.

BEST Songs of the Week 🔥

In 2020, Phoebe Bridgers took the music world by storm with her 4x Grammy-nominated album Punisher. The LP included the standout tracks Kyoto and I Know the End, two songs which are likely to appear on ‘best of the decade’ lists eight years from now.

Since then, the 27-year old has been SUPER busy. She released the four-track EP Copycat Killer, which included stripped-down versions of Punisher tracks. She reinterpreted Paul McCartney’s Seize the Day, Metallica’s Nothing Else Matters, and several songs from Bright Eyes’ Fevers and Mirrors. She provided backing vocals for Julien Baker on Favor. She collaborated with Kid Cudi, Luminous Kid, MUNA, The Killers, Taylor Swift, and Noah Gunderson. She released covers of John Prine’s Summer’s End, Bo Burnham’s That Funny Feeling, Tom Wait’s Day After Tomorrow, Radiohead’s Fake Plastic Trees with Arlo Parks, and Goo Good Dolls’ Iris with Maggie Rogers. She began building an indie empire by founding the record label Saddest Factory Records. Oh, and she performed at Coachella for the first time this past weekend.

However, nothing in that prolific body of work was a Phoebe-original. The indie rock songstress hadn’t released any new material of her own since Punisher. After two years, she’s finally returned with her new single Sidelines, written for the Hulu show Conversations with Friends. More subtle than her Punisher tracks, Sidelines is lyrically captivating and features a soaring, yet vulnerable, orchestral arrangement. Though Phoebe fans will be elated to hear that she’s back, we regret to inform you that she will not be releasing any more original material this year — and so, the wait begins again.

10. Ransom, The Game, Circumstances (East Coast Hip Hop) 👍👍

Albums Spotlight 💿

Alternative punkers Prince Daddy & The Hyena’s newest, eponymous record is so divergent from their previous record that they nearly killed ‘The Passenger,’ the protagonist of their last album Cosmic Thrill Seekers. Two minutes into the album, lead vocalist Kory Gregory sings, “The passenger almost died today, got his blood smeared across my face. They said that he might be okay, but he’ll never be the same.”

Back in October, when Prince Daddy & The Hyena dropped the album’s lead single Curly Q, we immediately knew that this record was going to sound different. Instead of the band’s signature punk riffs and aggressive vocals, Curly Q served up an introspective, gentle ballad which turned shoegazey in the second half. With their latest record, the Albany rockers double down on this grim sound. On Hollow As You Figured, arguably the band’s darkest song to date, Kory sings, “I found my God and he’s hollow as you figured. It’s just one big black rodent that chews apart my liver and spreads black mold.”

Though parts of the album reek of despair, listeners can find more characteristic punk sonics elsewhere on the album. For example, A Random Exercise in Impermanence (The Collector) features a blitz of drums, distorted riffs, and a fair dose of screaming.
