News from South Dublin County

A new section of the Dodder Greenway, between Cherryfield and the Balrothery Weir opened recently and is well worth a visit.

Our South Dublin Sub-group made a submission on the Council’s proposals for a light segregation cycle scheme on Templeville Road and Greentrees Road. We are generally pleased with the proposals but disappointed that nothing is proposed for the dangerous roundabout at the junction with Wainsfort Road and Cypress Grove Road. See the full submission here.

We’ve now started looking at the proposals for Limekiln and Whitehall Road West Cycle Scheme which covers some of the route of the D12 Bikebus. Let us know what you think at info@dublincycling.com or send in your own submission. The closing date is 11 May/2022. Details here.

Ellis Palmer is a BBC World Service journalist who uses a handcycle attached to his wheelchair to get around. He visited Dublin recently and met up with some cycle campaigners. Here is his account of his visit.

The Bohemian Football Club and Rothar are celebrating diversity and inclusivity in sports this year during BikeWeek. On Saturday May 14th, starting around 3pm, a group of people will be cycling towards Phibsborough and Dalymount to attend the women's league match. Also, from 11am, as Phibsborough's local festival Phizzfest starts, Saint Peter's Road will be opened to pedestrians, bikes and events. Save the date!

As usual Dublin Cycling Campaign will be promoting and supporting BikeWeek events, which will include a major family friendly cycle and a Food Cycle through a number of Community Gardens. We will be looking for marshalling volunteers for our events, so if you would like to help out at all please contact colmryder@gmail.com

Cyclist.ie groups are working hard countrywide preparing for BikeWeek 2022. It will run this year from Saturday May 14th until Sunday May 22nd. We will be posting details of some of our groups’ plans on Cyclist.ie over the coming weeks and you can also keep an eye on the BikeWeek webpage for further events.

We are particularly excited on seeing the draft programme for the wonderful Leitrim Cycling Festival which will take place in the town of Drumshanbo from Friday 20 until Sunday 22 May. Keep an eye on their website for details of events and hopefully we will see many of you there - and at some of the many other events taking place all around the country.

The European Cyclists’ Federation has published a new document highlighting six key policy areas that can be improved to better integrate cycling into the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).

While the ECF fully supports the European Commission’s recent proposal to give cycling a much stronger role in the revised Directive, it believes there is still room for further improvement. The ECF’s argument is grounded in the fact that cycling is the most energy efficient mode of transport, and providing easily accessible and secure parking infrastructure is just as critical for its regular use as charging infrastructure is for electric cars.
