Freedom Center's Exercise is Medicine® Receives Sentara Grant
Expands Reach of Health and Wellness Program
Because of a generous donation from the Sentara Community Health & Wellness Partnership, the Freedom Aquatic & Fitness Center is able to offer financial assistance for the Exercise is Medicine (EIM) program to those who could otherwise not be able to afford it.
EIM is a global health initiative managed by the American College of Sports Medicine. The purpose of EIM is to make the assessment and promotion of physical activity a standard in clinical care by connecting health care with evidence-based physical activity resources for people everywhere and of all abilities.
Because insurance currently does not cover EIM services, Sentara's support will make EIM available to more people. You don't have to be a Freedom Center member to participate in EIM there!

Mason Researchers Awarded
$1.57 Million Grant
A $1.57 million grant from the Department of Army, U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity, will help support a transformative approach for breast cancer treatment developed by scientists in Mason’s Center for Drug Discovery for Rare Diseases.
This effort is led by Milton Brown, MD, Center co-director and professor of practice in Mason's College of Science. Dr. Brown is one of only a handful of physician-scientists in the United States who holds a PhD in synthetic chemistry and a medical degree. The research aims to define the structural features and binding characteristics of BRCA1—a tumor-suppressing protein to the estrogen receptor in breast cancer stem cells.
