BAJI WELCOMES TPS FOR CAMEROONIANS IN THE US AND ASKS FOR A MORATORIUM ON DEPORTATIONS TO CAMEROON

Washington DC- April 15th, 2022- The Biden administration has designated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to some Cameroonians in the US.  This long-awaited reprieve will offer temporary protection from detention and deportation to about 40,000 Cameroonians already in the US.

While the news is welcome, the unjustified delay in making this designation has caused grave harm. For years, impacted Cameroonians and advocates have been imploring the Biden administration to provide Cameroonians with asylum and other protections from detention and deportation. Instead, this government has not only denied asylum to deserving Cameroonians but has also detained and deported hundreds who have then been tortured and killed on arrival.  The human cost of this callously delayed decision is incalculable.

In granting this TPS, the Biden administration has acknowledged that the *documented conflict in Cameroon is dangerous. In this spirit, we ask that DHS immediately stop all deportation flights to Cameroon.

The Black Alliance for Just Immigration is proud to have tirelessly worked alongside other Black-led immigrant and racial justice organizations advocating protections for Cameroonians. These include Cameroonian Advocacy Network, Haitian Bridge Alliance, African Communities Together, UndocuBlack Network, National Urban League, and many others including impacted individuals, all of who never gave up. Thank you.
