Sustainability Training in Agricultural Resource Systems and Mississippi Land Stewards Training
The Spring 2022 Sustainability Training in Agricultural Resources Systems (STARS) & Mississippi Land Stewards training will be held at Prairie Wildlife near West Point, Mississippi on May 3 & 4, 2022.

The STARS training will be 1:00pm-5:00pm on May 3rd and will cover current agricultural sustainability topics and how to facilitate conservation adoption and delivery at local levels.

The Mississippi Land Stewards training will begin at 8:00am on May 4th with coffee and breakfast snacks before we dive into hands-on learning of soil and water resource assessments that can be used with clients as we tour watershed conservation practices. The workshop will wrap up by 12:00pm and boxed lunches will be provided.

Travel and lodging expenses are eligible for full reimbursement for a limited number of registrants on a first-come basis. Sustainability CEUs (4) will be available on day 1 and Soil and Water Management (4) will be available on day 2.
  • Registration is required and open internally for all Extension personnel, as well as externally for any Agricultural and Natural Resource Professionals. Use the "Register Here" button below to register for the training.

Stewardship Resources & Tools
Shifting focus from yield to profitability for one Arkansas farmer has proved to be a successful strategy. In this Delta Farm Press article, learn why and how he chose to focus on cutting costs, and how it allows his operation to be more sustainable for future generations.

A decade of conservation  adoption and impacts has been released in a recent studies by the USDA-NRCS. The data show increased adoption of conservation practices, technologies, and enhanced production efficiency, with such practices having major benefits for reducing soil erosion, as well as increasing soil carbon. To learn more on what this NRCS study found, see this press release.
FSAs CLEAR30 program expands nationwide. The program provides an opportunity for certain landowners and producers implementing practices that improve water quality through the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) to enroll in 30-year contracts, extending lifespan and improving water quality. For more information or how to sign-up, see this FSA Press Release.
Conservation Webinar:
Carbon Market Opportunities in the Mid-South

Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at 12pm CST
April Conservation Webinar Registration
Carbon markets and opportunities to participate in carbon markets are topics of interest that generate many questions directed toward agricultural and natural resource professionals.  Dr. Beth Baker and Matthew Harrison, with the Mississippi State University Extension Service, will host, Dr. Shaun Tanger and Dr. Daryl Jones, also with MSU Extension to discuss how current Forest carbon programs work, what is happening 'under the hood' to determine carbon sequestration, and where opportunities and uncertainty remain.

WHY ATTEND: Understanding the tradeoffs of conservation practices and opportunities to diversify income are important for landowners, producers, agriculture and natural resource professionals. Anyone is welcome to attend this FREE webinar.

HOW TO JOIN: This is a virtual webinar, register below to join the webinar.

When you register above, you will receive a confirmation email that you are signed up and then a link to join will be sent to you prior to the webinar (if you don't receive one, check your spam folder).

Identifying Water Conservation Education Needs in Southeast
Research out of Mississippi State University was recently featured in the Journal of Extension. Extension Agents, along with other natural resource professionals, play a key role in providing the public with important knowledge on water resource conservation. This article surveyed Extension agents across the Southeast to determine training needs on 11 topics of water resource conservation topics and to develop a framework for enhancing agent competencies in certain areas of water conservation.  Read More>>>
Does CRP acres in semi-arid grassland sequester soil carbon?
The USDA-NRCS Conservation Reserve Program is an important program for enhancing habitat, sequestering carbon, and mitigating climate change. Many of the acres enrolled in the program include semi-arid grasslands, especially in the southern high plains of Texas. Results from a recent study published in Geoderma provides evidence for substantial annual carbon sequestration across the 0.92 million CRP acres in the region with year round organic inputs and ground cover. Read More>>>
Global mitigation strategies to improve water quality
Water degradation as a result of agricultural run-off is not a problem exclusive to the United States, but rather a global issue. The European Geosciences Union General Assembly recently published an abstract featuring Denmark's nutrient transport mitigation strategy strategy through a specific nitrogen and phosphorus management plan. The Danish plan features science-based conservation practice reduction efficiencies to design management systems at the watershed level through the stacking and strategic placement practices.
