Indianapolis Steps Up for the City Nature Challenge

The City Nature Challenge (CNC) is a competition motivating people around the world to find and document wildlife in their city. What started as a friendly competition between San Francisco and Los Angeles back in 2016 has grown into a global event, coordinating over 450 cities in a citizen science event of finding and documenting urban wildlife. Indianapolis is once again stepping up to this 4-day challenge Friday, April 28 through Monday, May 2. ROW's Ecology & Education Committee is leading a number of events to encourage you to explore Indianapolis' biodiversity with a group or on your own!

Friday, April 29 - Pogue's Run Nature Walk:  Join Brittany Davis, ROW Ecology & Education Committee Co-Chair and Regional Manager of Eagle Creek Park Friday for a nature walk along Pogue's Run. This urban nature walk will kick off from Spades Park (1800 Nowland Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46201) at 6:30 PM. Parking is available along Brookside Parkway or across the street at the Kan-Kan Cinema and Brasserie.

Sunday, May 1 - Indiana State Museum's White River Trail:  Jacob Brinkman, Ecology & Education Committee Co-Chair and Ecologist for Indy Land Stewardship, rounds out the weekend of events with a nature walk at Indiana State Museum (650 W Washington St. Indianapolis 46204) at the Washington Street circle drive entrance at 1PM. The Urban Wilderness Trail provides access to a 250-acre urban oasis in downtown Indianapolis along the White River. This trail is full of vibrant wildlife and is a living outdoor laboratory for native Indiana flora and fauna species. Parking available at the on-site parking garage and will be validated.

Do-It-Yourself: Bingo Cards and iNaturalist App
Can't make it to one of the Ecology & Education Committee's events this month? You can do-it-yourself with a Backyard BioBlitz Bingo Card or using the iNaturalist app and joining the Indianapolis City Nature Challenge 2022 Project! Print out a card or download the iNaturalist app on your phone to track the native plants and animals you find. Explore your own backyard or use ROW's Exploration & Celebration Guide to find places along our waterways to visit or visit Indiana Sciences for bioblitz inspiration. Local schools, including SENSE Charter School along Pleasant Run, are committing to spending time outside identifying neighboring animals, bugs, and plants. Events will continue to update on ROW's event's calendarHow do you plan to meet the challenge?

Volunteer Spotlight: Amanda Wade and Susan Vogt

This month, ROW recognizes a dynamic duo along our Pogue's Run Waterway: Amanda Wade and Susan Vogt. Long-time active members of the Pogue's Run Waterway Committee, Wade and Vogt have lead a number of community cleanups, events, and gatherings along the waterway throughout the years.

Wade shares, "I had always known that our Central Indiana waterways were in trouble, but moving to Holy Cross and living on Pogue's Run gave me a new perspective on how I could make a difference on a hyper-local scale." Vogt shares her love for the waterway, "It has been my pleasure to work with the Pogue’s Run Waterway. My favorite place to walk is the Pogue’s Run Art & Nature Park; it is a peaceful place to enjoy nature and animals."

This year, the two have teamed up to plan the Pogue's Run Kite Day and Neighborhood Cleanup for Saturday, April 28. Wade, Vice President of Holy Cross Neighborhood, will lead neighbors in a community cleanup from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM while Vogt, Director of Economic Development for Near East Area Renewal (NEAR), sets up the Kite Day event in Highland Park from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Free paper kites will be provided to the first 30 participants  and lesson plans on 'Experimenting with Kite Tails', 'Kites Around the World', and 'Measuring Wind' are available for those interested in building their own kites ahead of the event. Let us know you're coming and register on Eventbrite today.

Thank you, Amanda and Susan, for continuously working to bring awareness to and improving the health of our watershed while encouraging neighbors to share these beautiful spaces!

Groundwork Indy Welcomes New Leadership

Spring is a time of new growth and change and Collective partner Groundwork Indy (GWI) has embraced this dynamic season in stride. After a major move from their Central Canal location on Burdsal Parkway to the Circle City Industrial Complex along Pogue's Run, GWI has had a season of growth. The new move coincided with the launch of another GroundCorp Team, working with the nearby Arsenal Tech High School. The GroundCorp is an environmental stewardship, landscape design-build, and maintenance service. GroundCorp members work part time, receiving valuable, paid, hands-on experience, while also participating in structured, life-skills and job preparedness training provided by program partners. One of the first projects GWI will work on is the Pogue's Run Unified Stream Assessment, to assist with the waterway committee's habitat survey. Neighbors interested in supporting the habitat survey on May 15th, 18th, or 22nd can email kelly@ourwaterways.org.

Another positive, major change with GWI is the hiring of their new Executive Director, Adam Velazquez. Born and raised in Northwest Indiana, Velazquez has spent much of his time out in nature and gained his passion for helping others from his parents. Most recently, he has served as a case manager and director at Helping Veterans and Families (HVAF), and is excited to transition toward environmental work and youth development, increasing capacity to provide resources and support to local youth and larger community. Welcome, Adam!

LEC Resumes "Take a Walk!" Series

Back by popular demand, the Little Eagle Creek 'Take a Walk!' hosted its first walk of 2022 on April 15 after an early April rain delay. Over 30 neighbors and friends made their way out to Vinny's Drive Bar for a walk 2.5 mile from the levee to AJ Thatcher Golf Course along Eagle Creek. The group's main objective was to spot the  neighborhood's two roosting eagles, affectionately identified as 'Ben' and 'Babe', who sit atop a massive nest above the golf courses' fourth hole. Walkers were treated to an eagle flyover as well as observing the other eagle partner standing watch over their eggs. A huge thank you to Bryan Crouch, of AJ Thatcher Golf Course, Vinny's Drive Bar, and our Little Eagle Creek co-chairs Jeb Bardon and Joan Servaas for organizing a spectacular event where eagles soar.
